The Kern House-Built about 1885

Alexander and Eleonora Kern, along with their two children, moved to the new settlement of Clermont, Florida in 1884. They traveled by steamboat bringing two horses and a wagon with them.

The Kerns purchased eight vacant lots on Montrose Street at the southwest corner of 5th Street, and built their two-story frame house on the property around 1885.

Alexander was one of the 31 pioneers who signed the original legal notice of organization of the Town of Clermont on June 9, 1891.

Mr. Kern also built and operated the first public water system in Clermont. In 1897, he purchased the Wilson General Merchandise Store on Montrose Street at 8th Street and operated it until his death in 1907.

The Kern home was moved to the Clermont Historic Village Museum grounds in 2006 where it has been preserved, maintained and furnished with era appropriate furnishings and decor.

Visit the Clermont Historic Village on Saturday and Sundays from 1-4PM for tours and a stroll down Clermont’s historic path.

It’s hard to believe that it’s been 25 years since the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Members of the Clermont Historical Society and Clermont Historic Village Museum volunteers honor the 2,977 lives lost that day and all the first responders who answered the call to serve then and beyond. May we all vow to never, ever forget and walk in remembrance of the hope and unity that ensued afterwards. We continue praying for the families and first responders affected to this day. Many of us were at Clermont’s 9/11 ceremony today and we were moved. 🇺🇸🙏

More than 700 people gathered in Clermont to honor the 2,977 lives lost on 9/11, featuring survivor stories and a moving 25th anniversary tribute.

The Quonset hut, located at the Clermont Historic Village, is an authentic piece of World War II history.

During WWII, a military searchlight battalion was stationed in Clermont, in this exact Quonset hut, always on the lookout for German planes that might have come this far.

The military personnel lived and worked in these prefabricated buildings throughout the war.

Visit the Village this weekend and take in the vast collection of memorabilia that has been donated for education and entertainment. Be sure to ask one of the staff about the sealed up searchlight door near the front entrance.

We often hear the phrase “we didn’t know that this place was here”, when visitors stumble upon the Clermont Historic Village-CHV.

The CHV is open each weekend from 1 PM - 4 PM and the volunteer staff would love to share with you the deep history that the grounds and buildings hold.

Stop by 490 West Avenue, in Historic Downtown Clermont, for a quick glimpse, or a deep dive into the rich history of Clermont, a town that was founded in 1884.

Rental spaces are also available for weddings, family reunions and other community events. Details are available on our website or ask any of the CHV staff during your next visit.

Congratulations to Jesus and Ana on their “I Dos” exchanged yesterday afternoon inside our little Grace Chapel located at theClermont Historic Village Museum.

Everyone in attendance was excited and happy, they all looked gorgeous and the ceremony was absolutely beautiful, but it sure took us by surprise! 😄

Saturday
12:45 pm: Father & brother of the bride show up to inquire about the chapel for a wedding. Volunteers let them know to come back about 2pm when the manager will be arriving so she can check the date, time, price, etc., but out of curiosity, they ask when it will be taking place and the response is “TODAY!”

2 pm: The duo returns to see about the rental, they fill out the application, make all arrangements then go home to get ready.

4 pm: Everyone starts arriving for the ceremony and a live feed is set up so that the bride’s mom can watch from Chile.

4:30 pm: The bride arrives.

5:15pm: Another marriage at the chapel is officiated, pictures are taken and all is great down at the Village!
