Search and Rescue Training will be taking place along the Elm Lick Trail on Sunday, June 14 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. If you visit Bernheim, you may notice emergency vehicles parked in the Fire Tower lot. Our ranger team is partnering with the Southeast Bullitt County Fire Department and other emergency response agencies for this important training.

It's hard to imagine now, but when Bernheim's fire tower was constructed in 1929, the forest we know today was still just a vision. ๐ŸŒฒ

Our founder, Isaac W. Bernheim, had the 48-foot tower shipped in pieces by train and hauled to the top of Ledgerock K**b, where it stood watch over land that had yet to fully grow into a forest. Rising nearly 1,000 feet above sea level, the tower helped protect the future forest Bernheim imagined.

For decades, volunteers and staff watched for smoke from brush fires, lightning strikes, and even sparks thrown from coal-fired trains passing along Bernheimโ€™s northern border. The tower remained an important part of Kentuckyโ€™s fire detection network until 1980 and today, it still offers one of the best views in the region.

Happy World Environment Day! ๐Ÿ’š Bernheim protects 18,000 acres โ€” providing habitat for endangered and threatened wildlife and safeguarding the land for generations to come. In 2025, our natural areas team focused on restoring wetlands along Wilson Creek and Harrison Fork. Wetlands improve water quality, recharge underground aquifers, and increase biodiversity of plants and wildlife.
