Congratulations to our own Firefighter/EMT Brooke Smith on graduating from Clemson University today! She earned her bachelor's degree in human nutrition with an emphasis in basic and behavioral health, along with a minor in life sciences and a public health certificate.
Brooke, a native of Pickens, S.C., joined CUFD as a part-time member in February 2023, before earning a promotion to a full-time position in September 2023.

What got you interested in the fire service/EMS? And how did you end up at CUFD?
I first obtained my EMT certification after high school, which allowed me to gain early experience in emergency medical response through Pickens County EMS. As an undergraduate freshman, I became a part-time member of CUFD EMS staff. After several months of employment, I was offered a full-time position on B-Shift at CUFD, along with the opportunity to attend the South Carolina Fire Academy, where I became certified as a cross-trained Firefighter/EMT.
Initially, I never envisioned becoming a firefighter, but I became intrigued by the role after experience in EMS. I found that I thrive in high-stress situations and enjoy implementing solutions in fast-paced, adrenaline-driven environments. The physically demanding nature of the fire service also appealed to me, as it challenges both mental and physical resilience while allowing me to expand my skill set and contribute in a more dynamic, team-based role.
What do you plan to do after graduation?
After graduation, I plan to continue working full-time in the fire service while integrating my background in human nutrition and public health to better serve the community through both emergency response and preventative care. My short and long-term goals include advancing my certification to Advanced EMT and pursuing Physician Assistant School to become a highly equipped medical practitioner in surgical or primary care.
