Day becomes night at Fort Worth

July 29th, 1878
On this day in 1878, a team of astronomers converged on Fort Worth to observe a total solar eclipse. Leonard Waldo of Harvard College Observatory directed the scientific party. Local and out-of-state academic institutions sent representatives, and their observations produced both sketches and photographs of the event. These studies led to important findings regarding the height of the sun's chromosphere and also produced dramatic images of the solar corona.
