We had our end of the year Band Celebration today! 16 years of the Smith Band has been awesome! Please continue to read to hear what was shared with our students:
It has been a great year at SMS! I’m so happy with how we have finished our time as the Smith MS Band! You are the finale to 16 years of incredible music making. To recap our year:
We had several students make IHB and the All-Region Band
Tons of kids earned a 1st division on their solo
The Jazz Ensemble performed in Houston at a conference
The Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble earned UIL Sweepstakes awards. The Symphonic Band earned their 10th and Wind Ensemble earned their 15th! That’s 25 Sweepstakes for the SMS Bands!
The Jazz Ensemble earned Outstanding MS Jazz Band at the Eastland Jazz Festival and 1st runner-up in the middle school division of the Tarleton Jazz Festival. Two students earned outstanding soloist awards at the Tarleton Jazz Festival, too.
Over the course of the last 16 years, we’ve had numerous students earn positions in IHB and All-Region. We’ve earned 1st divisions at various festivals as well as “Best in Class” awards. The Smith Bands have performed at Tarleton State University, Texas Christian University, Texas Lutheran University, and the University of North Texas. We’ve played at Fort Hood, the Alamo, and inside the Texas State Capitol. The Wind Ensemble was recognized with a national award in 2020 with the National Wind Band Honors “Mark of Excellence” Award. It’s easy to estimate that in 16 years the SMS Bands have given over 200 performances having played well over 400 pieces of music!
I’m so blessed to have been the band director at Smith for its entire 16 years! I am proud of the hundreds of students I’ve gotten to teach here. On day one, we started our band motto: Superior Standards ~ Superior Success. Every student has lived to this and that’s why we’ve accomplished so much.
As Cleburne ISD transitions next year to the new realignment, I am transitioning to a new position, as well. This was the most difficult decision I’ve ever been faced with, but an opportunity to lead the band program at Howard JH in Waxahachie ISD has presented itself and I will be teaching there next year. I wish nothing but the best for the Golden Pride Band program which has been my home for 16 years. We will all have new beginnings next year, whether you will be a freshman at CHS or a 7th or 8th grader at WMS. I’m so happy to celebrate all of our successes today and looking forward to our future, wherever that may be! I will miss you all - students, parents, and the community!
