The CFR ALS Team assisted the EMS Division in our departments Recurit School EMS portion. Recruits were trained by our own ALS Team, other members of our department and Tampa Generals Aeromed Flight Team. Recurits were also trained by Aeromed on K9 Care. As part of the EMS portion, the recruits compete in the CFR Recuit EMS Challenge. A “competition like” multi patient, multi scenario, graded assessment. The class is split into three teams and compete based on national and local protocols and treatments. The team with the best score is awarded a 1st place trophy and their names engraved on a plaque for all to see.

Please congratulate our 1st Place team

The CFR ALS Team recently competed at the 2026 First There First Care ALS Competition in Fort Lauderdale.

Day 1 consisted of three challenging scenarios involving four patients in each scenario. The team delivered a strong performance and finished 3rd overall, earning a spot in the championship round for the first time in team history. Only 7 of 22 teams advanced to Day 2.

Adding to the challenge, our usual second medic, Nolan Slone, was unavailable to compete. Stepping into the role was alternate Chris Collins, who competed in his first competition and helped the team advance to the finals.

Day 2 featured an intense final round consisting of 11 patients and some of the most complex medical and trauma scenarios our team has faced. The CFR ALS Team ultimately finished 7th overall among an extremely competitive field.

Throughout the competition, our team assessed and treated a total of 23 patients, including:

• Pediatric failing tracheostomy
• Ciguatera poisoning
• Rotavirus infection
• Severe pediatric asthma exacerbation
• Pediatric intracranial hemorrhage
• Septic shock
• Major burns
• Torsades de Pointes
• Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT)
• Anaphylaxis from a barb sting
• Pediatric drowning
• Type I decompression sickness
• Seizures secondary to a brain tumor
• Esophageal varices
• Electrocution injuries
• Airway obstruction requiring cricothyrotomy
• Spontaneous pneumothorax
• Traumatic spinal cord injury

These competitions challenge providers to apply critical thinking, teamwork, leadership, communication, and advanced patient care skills under pressure. We are proud of our team’s performance, proud to have reached the finals for the first time at First There First Care, and proud to represent Clearwater Fire Rescue on the state EMS competition circuit.

Congratulations to all of the competitors, organizers, judges, and volunteers who made this event possible.
