3/10 Today in Florida History from the Florida Historical Society!

1783 – The final naval battle of the American Revolutionary War occurred off the coast of Cape Canaveral on this date. Two ships of the Continental Navy—the USS Alliance (1778 frigate) commanded by John Barry and the Duc de Lauzun commanded by Captain John Green—were sailing north from Havana carrying 72,000 Spanish silver dollars intended to support the Continental Army in Philadelphia. Three British ships sighted the vessels, and the 28-gun frigate HMS Sybil (Royal Navy frigate), commanded by James Vashon, pursued them. After the Sybil exchanged fire with the slower Duc de Lauzun, Barry turned the larger Alliance back toward the British ship. Waiting until the vessels were close alongside, he delivered a powerful broadside that badly damaged the Sybil, forcing it to withdraw from the fight. The engagement lasted less than an hour, after which the American ships continued their voyage north and successfully carried the much-needed funds to support the Revolutionary cause.

On this day in 1770, British soldiers opened fire on a mob of colonists in Boston in what later became known as the Boston Massacre. Five colonists were killed after the crowd hurled snowballs, ice, and clubs in protest at the soldiers.
