When the sunlight lined up perfectly with the mouth of the City of Clearlake's iconic dragon sculpture, 7th grader Ellee Meckfessel knew she had found something special.
That split-second moment earned her first place in the 18 years and under category of the City's Our People. Our Progress. Photo Challenge. Her photo was one of more than 150 entries submitted by community members eager to showcase the people, places and moments that make Clearlake special.
"The dragon looked like it was breathing fire and I thought that was pretty cool," said Ellee. "Sometimes you just get lucky and see something at exactly the right time. That's what happened with the dragon photo."
Ellee is completing seventh grade at Obsidian Middle School and spends much of her free time in Clearlake, especially at Austin Park, where she enjoys playing volleyball and attending events. She has enjoyed Clearlake's Volleyball Clinics which have helped her with her participation in the school's volleyball program and playing for fun.
Ellee has liked photography ever since she was little, taking pictures every chance she can. She served as a photographer for Obsidian's Yearbook Club this year and hopes to again next year.
Outside of photography and volleyball, Ellee enjoys movies, restaurants and shopping. She also hopes to learn how to kayak someday and is excited about America's 250th Birthday celebrations at Austin Park. At home, she spends time spoiling her two cats, Rokky and Tie-Tie.
Vice Mayor Tara Downey said she was excited by the strong participation from local youth.
"I was thrilled to see so many young people participate in the photo contest," said Vice Mayor Downey. "Ellee's photo captured a unique moment right at the lake which reminds us how much beauty and creativity can be found right here in our backyard."
Cuando la luz del sol se alineó perfectamente con la boca de la icónica escultura del dragón de la ciudad de Clearlake, Ellee Meckfessel, estudiante de séptimo grado, supo que había encontrado algo especial.
Ese instante fugaz le valió el primer lugar en la categoría de 18 años o menos del concurso fotográfico de la ciudad titulado "Nuestra Gente. Nuestro Progreso". Su fotografía fue una de las más de 150 propuestas enviadas por miembros de la comunidad deseosos de mostrar las personas, los lugares y los momentos que hacen especial a Clearlake.
"El dragón parecía que estaba lanzando fuego por la boca, y pensé que eso era genial", comentó Ellee. "A veces simplemente tienes suerte y ves algo en el momento exacto. Eso fue lo que sucedió con la foto del dragón".
Ellee está cursando el séptimo grado en la escuela secundaria Obsidian Middle School y dedica gran parte de su tiempo libre a disfrutar de Clearlake, especialmente en el parque Austin Park, donde le gusta jugar al voleibol y asistir a eventos. Ha disfrutado mucho de las clínicas de voleibol de Clearlake, las cuales le han servido de ayuda tanto para su participación en el equipo escolar como para jugar por pura diversión.
A Ellee le ha gustado la fotografía desde que era pequeña, y toma fotos siempre que tiene oportunidad. Este año se desempeñó como fotógrafa para el Club del Anuario de Obsidian y espera volver a hacerlo el próximo año.
Además de la fotografía y el voleibol, a Ellee le gustan las películas, ir a restaurantes y salir de compras. También espera aprender a hacer kayak algún día y le entusiasman las celebraciones del 250.º aniversario de los Estados Unidos que tendrán lugar en Austin Park. En casa, dedica tiempo a mimar a sus dos gatos: Rokky y Tie-Tie.
La vicealcaldesa Tara Downey expresó su entusiasmo ante la gran participación de los jóvenes de la localidad.
"Me llenó de alegría ver a tantos jóvenes participar en el concurso de fotografía", afirmó la vicealcaldesa Downey. "La foto de Ellee capturó un momento único justo a orillas del lago, recordándonos cuánta belleza y creatividad podemos encontrar aquí mismo, en nuestro propio entorno".
