We will continue to work at the bad spots around the county. The areas in the shade that have been packed down are very difficult to deal with. We are salting them again in an effort to loosen it up some, and will continue to try and plow it off. We are doing all we can. Stay safe...RCRD

Good morning! With the temps as low as they are salt is no longer effective in melting the snow/ice, we are going to need some help from mother nature in the thawing process. We will continue to do what we can. The more they are driven on the harder it is to clear. Road conditions will be bad for the next few days. Stay warm...RCRD

It's the last day of January and we have had a flood, ice storm and now a snow, I hope February is kinder to us. While I have a little time I would like to thank all the volunteers that helped with clearing trees and roadways during the ice storm; Chad Dixon, Boyd Speed, Josh Bleckley, Matt Woods, Will Nichols, Darrin Giles and the many more that I don't know about. Thank you Wanda Henry for all the meals you have cooked, Jay Couey at Chick-Fila for all the food you have donated, Blue Hound BBQ and Ben Watts at Henry's Restaurant for feeding us as well. I'm sure I am missing others that have helped, please understand we are very great full. We will be monitoring the conditions this morning and will be ready to act. As of right not the snow it is supposed to stop snowing around noon. At this time there is not enough snow to plow and we would be scraping off the majority of our pretreatment. Once the Snow stops we will be out plowing and applying more material to our roads in an effort to clear all our roads. If you need live updates please tune in to WYAABobMcCraw, the modern day your Your Friend 4. Stay safe...RCRD

Good Morning!! It looks like we have had a mix of freezing rain and sleet through the night that will continue through the day. The roads are extremely slick, DO NOT travel unless it is an emergency. The temperature is suppose to rise through out the day which will help in the clearing process. Please stay off the roads, the more they are traveled the harder it will pack down. I don't always get cold but when I do, I prefer a warm fire...Stay warm my friends!!

I hope everyone has taken the time time to properly prepare for the storm. We started pretreating our roads last night and are about finish up. We will continue to monitor the weather and roads. We will be doing our best to clear roads and trees, but my first concern is the safety of my employees. If it becomes too dangerous we will pull back until it is safe to continue working.

* DO NOT PUT SALT ON A GRAVEL ROAD.
* Please, ONLY call 911 if you have an Emergency.
* If your power goes out, call your power company. Most of the time the power company already knows.

Stay safe...RCRD

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Monitor the latest forecasts for updates on this situation.

Persons should consider delaying all travel. If travel is absolutely
necessary, drive with extreme caution. Consider taking a winter
storm kit along with you, including such items as tire chains,
booster cables, flashlight, shovel, blankets and extra clothing.
Also take water, a first aid kit, and anything else that would help
you survive in case you become stranded.

Rabun County Office of Emergency Management Winter Storm Preparedness Advisory For Immediate Release
Citizens and Visitors of Rabun County,
The Rabun County Office of Emergency Management is closely monitoring a potential winter storm system forecasted to impact our area this weekend. While forecast confidence continues to increase, the exact amounts and impacts are still being refined. However, residents and visitors are urged to prepare now for potentially hazardous winter conditions.
Due to Rabun County’s mountainous terrain and remote areas, some locations may become inaccessible during the storm. Public safety personnel may experience delays or limitations in reaching certain areas should conditions deteriorate; crews may have to remove large amounts of debris to access you. It is critical that residents, particularly those in remote or hard-to-reach locations, take immediate steps to prepare for the possibility of prolonged isolation.
Residents with medical needs that require electricity or specialized equipment are strongly encouraged to make arrangements now. This includes ensuring access to backup power or planning to stay with family or friends who have reliable backup power capabilities.
All residents and visitors should prepare for the possibility of extended power outages and limited travel for several days. Please consider the following preparedness actions:
• Have enough potable water for at least 72 hours, especially if you are not on a municipal water system
• Stock sufficient food, medications, and essential supplies for an extended period of time also including food and water for pets and animals
• Ensure you have a way to charge cell phones, including backup power banks
• Have flashlights with extra batteries readily available
• Avoid candles when possible and use battery-powered lighting
• Prepare a safe way to stay warm without power, such as layered clothing, blankets, and safe heating alternatives
• Keep vehicles fueled and parked safely, but avoid unnecessary travel during storm conditions
• Never use generators indoors or in basements, have extra fuel on hand
• If the need arises, Sheltering and warming facility will be located at the Rec Department Gym #3, if opened we will notify via social media and www.rabuncounty.ga.gov
Residents should also be prepared for the possibility that transportation may be severely limited or unavailable for several days following the storm, particularly in higher elevations and secondary roadways. Once the storm begins, all travel is strongly discouraged and should be restricted to extreme emergent conditions only. This measure is necessary to protect public safety and allow emergency services to operate without interference.
Now is the time to prepare. Taking action in advance can significantly reduce risk to you, your family, and emergency responders.
The Rabun County Office of Emergency Management will continue to provide updates as new information becomes available. Please monitor local media, official county communications, and emergency alerts for the latest information.
Thank you for your cooperation and commitment to safety.
