Rabun County Office of Emergency Management Winter Storm Preparedness Advisory For Immediate Release
Citizens and Visitors of Rabun County,
The Rabun County Office of Emergency Management is closely monitoring a potential winter storm system forecasted to impact our area this weekend. While forecast confidence continues to increase, the exact amounts and impacts are still being refined. However, residents and visitors are urged to prepare now for potentially hazardous winter conditions.
Due to Rabun County’s mountainous terrain and remote areas, some locations may become inaccessible during the storm. Public safety personnel may experience delays or limitations in reaching certain areas should conditions deteriorate; crews may have to remove large amounts of debris to access you. It is critical that residents, particularly those in remote or hard-to-reach locations, take immediate steps to prepare for the possibility of prolonged isolation.
Residents with medical needs that require electricity or specialized equipment are strongly encouraged to make arrangements now. This includes ensuring access to backup power or planning to stay with family or friends who have reliable backup power capabilities.
All residents and visitors should prepare for the possibility of extended power outages and limited travel for several days. Please consider the following preparedness actions:
• Have enough potable water for at least 72 hours, especially if you are not on a municipal water system
• Stock sufficient food, medications, and essential supplies for an extended period of time also including food and water for pets and animals
• Ensure you have a way to charge cell phones, including backup power banks
• Have flashlights with extra batteries readily available
• Avoid candles when possible and use battery-powered lighting
• Prepare a safe way to stay warm without power, such as layered clothing, blankets, and safe heating alternatives
• Keep vehicles fueled and parked safely, but avoid unnecessary travel during storm conditions
• Never use generators indoors or in basements, have extra fuel on hand
• If the need arises, Sheltering and warming facility will be located at the Rec Department Gym #3, if opened we will notify via social media and www.rabuncounty.ga.gov
Residents should also be prepared for the possibility that transportation may be severely limited or unavailable for several days following the storm, particularly in higher elevations and secondary roadways. Once the storm begins, all travel is strongly discouraged and should be restricted to extreme emergent conditions only. This measure is necessary to protect public safety and allow emergency services to operate without interference.
Now is the time to prepare. Taking action in advance can significantly reduce risk to you, your family, and emergency responders.
The Rabun County Office of Emergency Management will continue to provide updates as new information becomes available. Please monitor local media, official county communications, and emergency alerts for the latest information.
Thank you for your cooperation and commitment to safety.
