Please join us in welcoming three new members of the Clayton Fire Department.

Master Firefighter Zachary Bourgoin (left - photo 1), Firefighter David Honeycutt (right - photo 1), and Master Firefighter Nicholas Sorrell (photo 2) recently joined our team and are getting settled into their new roles.

You will see them training alongside our crews, responding to calls, and serving the Clayton community as part of our department.

A crashed vehicle does not always leave an easy way in or out.

Clayton firefighters spent time this week training for vehicle extrication, practicing the skills they may need when someone is trapped after a crash.

Crews worked on stabilizing vehicles, managing hazards, and using specialized rescue tools to safely reach and remove the person inside. It takes teamwork and careful coordination with every move made around the needs of the patient.

Across the country, fire departments respond to more than a million vehicle crashes with injuries each year, according to the National Fire Protection Association.

Hands-on training like this gives our firefighters the chance to practice those skills before they are needed on the side of the road.

There is a little more than classroom learning happening here. Around a dozen of our staff members are working toward their FAA Part 107 certification, which will allow them to operate drones as part of a future department drone program. Several Clayton Police Department officers joined us for the training, too.

Why drones? They can give first responders a view they cannot always get from the ground. During a fire, crews could use an aerial view to see conditions around a building or across a large area. During a search for a missing person, a drone could help cover ground more quickly. They can also help responders get a better look at an emergency scene while keeping crews a safe distance from potential hazards.

Our drone program has not launched yet, but this training is one of the steps toward getting there.

A big thank you to the Clayton Police Department for hosting us in its training room and learning alongside us. We are looking forward to seeing where this new tool can take us.

Our Hurricane Preparedness Kit has a new home. Congratulations to Julie, who stopped by Clayton Fire Station 1 to pick up the kit we put together and meet some of our crew!

We also want to thank everyone who watched and helped us spread the word. Every like, comment, and share helped put hurricane preparedness in front of someone else in our community.

There may be only one kit to give away, but the shopping list is for all of us. Take a look at your supplies at home. If something from our cart reminded you of an item you are missing, add it when you can.

Training together helps us respond together.

Over the last couple of weeks, Clayton Fire Department has been conducting confined space rescue training near Sam’s Branch Greenway alongside Johnston County EMS and the Town of Clayton's Water Resources Department.

The training included a rescue scenario about 40 feet below ground, giving crews a chance to practice safely reaching and removing someone from a tight, hard-to-access space. Crews used ropes, harnesses, and other rescue equipment to practice the steps they would take during a real emergency.

Water Resources staff were able to watch the training up close, and some even joined in on the exercises. Confined spaces can be part of the environments our Water Resources crews work around, so having everyone train together is important.

Exercises like this help our teams understand their roles and know what to expect when every second counts.

Thank you to Johnston County EMS and our Water Resources team for training alongside us and helping make sure we’re ready when our community needs us.

We’re in the peak of Atlantic hurricane season, which means now is a good time to make sure you’re prepared.

We grabbed our shopping list and headed to Walmart in Clayton to build a hurricane preparedness kit, and we’re showing you what made it into the cart.

There’s nothing quite like seeing a fire truck through the eyes of a child.

The Clayton Fire Department spent some time with our youngest community members today during a visit to The Growing Years - Clayton Briarcliff. Along with plenty of questions, smiles, and an up-close look at a fire truck, our firefighters also had the opportunity to share some lessons that could make a big difference in an emergency.

Our firefighters talked with the kids about some important fire and life safety lessons, including:
-When and how to call 911
-How to stop, drop and roll
-What a firefighter looks like in full gear and why there’s no need to be afraid
-Remembering that firefighters are their friends and are there to help

The kids also got an up-close look at some of the equipment our firefighters use and had the chance to explore one of our fire trucks.

Visits like this are an important part of what we do. Teaching fire prevention and safety at an early age helps children build knowledge and habits that can last a lifetime. Just as importantly, spending time together helps our youngest residents become comfortable with the firefighters who are here to keep them and their families safe.
