It was a beautiful day for a small, but mighty crew to volunteer for a day of service in honor of 9/11. Looking forward to doing this again next year.

In the spirit of the unity we experienced 25 years ago, volunteers in the community are invited to join us this morning for Clayton’s Day of Service.

For the early risers, coffee and donuts are served at 8 am, and the projects begin shortly after. See you soon!

Reminder: Join us this Saturday, September 12th, Claytonians will gather as volunteers in remembrance of 9/11 to work together for the betterment of our community!

Projects this year will include Daffodil Hill, Keller House and possibly mulching Main Street planters.

Volunteers will meet at City Hall at 8 am for donuts and coffee. From there, volunteers can choose from service projects posted in the courtyard. Trash bags and gloves will also be available to volunteers if they desire to create a specific project in their neighborhood or other areas of local need.

We look forward to seeing you! As is the Clayton way, volunteering side-by-side together, we will make Clayton a better place!

On Friday morning, ConFire, the City of Clayton, members of our community, and local elected officials gathered at Station 11 to remember and honor all who answered the call twenty-five years ago.

Guest speakers recalled where they were on September 11, 2001, the improvements made at fire departments throughout the country, and the spirit of unity and kindness that brought our country together in the days and weeks that followed.

The courage, resilience, and sacrifice of the first responders and service members, and the families and communities forever changed in the face of unimaginable tragedy are why we pledge to .

When we first met Viktoria Nagel-Molnar at a CBCA meeting and heard her idea for a magazine showcasing the beauty of Clayton, I never imagined we would be the feature story. Our community is lucky to have the team at Clayton Living highlighting a different perspective and all that our city has to offer its residents.

The August edition is out now, and since the magazine is not yet delivered to all homes we will share the full article in the coming weeks. Thank you to Clayton Police Department and all of the organizers of another successful National Night Out! It was great to see everyone enjoying themselves and celebrating together while learning about public safety awareness, promoting crime prevention, and creating a sense of community. Thanks to the efforts of my fellow Keller Ridge Firewise board member, Deborah Gong, we had a successful community evacuation discussion on Thursday night.

Residents from nearby Firewise neighborhoods and those just getting started joined us to hear presentations and ask questions pertaining to w**d abatement, fire breaks, evacuation routes, and emergency preparedness. Our guest speakers included Chief Jeremy Crone from Clayton PD, ConFire Fire Prevention Captain Joe Ottolini, and Ashley Lerner and Rick Kovar from Contra Costa County Office of Emergency Services. Handouts were provided and I have included a few photos of some of them, as well as photos of evening.

Key takeaways included:
Create a plan with your families now and know where you are meeting, then create a back up plan just in case.

Have non-cellular communication devices and make sure they are charged, know what channel to use during an emergency, have a back up channel, and know where the devices are stored.

Designate a relative or friend outside of the immediate area that everyone knows how to contact in case none of the other tools are available (ex: radios can’t be used, or primary and secondary communication plans fail).

Subscribe to the CWS (Community Warning System) today. This app coordinates with law enforcement and fire to provide emergency alerts or immediate danger. This includes evacuation warnings, evacuation orders, and shelter in place. This is the best way to know when and how to evacuate your neighborhood.

IMPORTANT NOTE, if you sign up for text messages or phone calls with this system then you must have your phone on to receive the message. For example, if your phone is on Do Not Disturb you will not receive timely alerts unless you turn on “Emergency Bypass” or “DND exceptions for Favorite contacts” for the CWS phone number (925-655-0195).

If you have a disability and know you’ll need more time to grab your go bag and leave then it’s best to evacuate before waiting for the official order from first responders.

Become actively engaged with your neighbors and in your Firewise neighborhood to create defensible space and harden your homes.

Contact [email protected] to report hazardous conditions in your neighborhood. Including photos and a description of the hazard is encouraged.
