Update: Susan Benas, former owner of the Inn, answered our question. She stated that they were plate covers and were used to keep food warm on the way to the tables. Plates were smaller back then and these would fit the plates that we found at the Inn.

We found several of these bowls with holes in the bottom at the Inn. They are about 6” in diameter and the hole is about 1” in diameter. The bowls are about 3.5” tall. Does anyone know what these were for? I asked AI and I didn’t receive a logical answer. It was suggested that this was used to hold a can of condensed or evaporated milk on the table and the hole was used to push the empty can out. This is the wrong shape and size for that to be the answer. It was also suggested that it was used as part of the coffee making process, or a candle holder, or part of a juicing machine. I don’t think I believe any of those answers either. Can someone please satisfy our curiosity and tell us what these were used for? Could they have held small plants to decorate the tables?

We are pleased to announce that we have selected Con Tech Building Systems, Inc. for the first phase of the TI Inn reconstruction project! We expect that there will be activity on site starting early in August. The initial steps will involve asbestos mitigation and some site work, as well as demolition of the old additions at the rear of the building.

The first phase of the project will include all of the exterior and structural work, as well as major systems including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, sprinklers, and the elevator/stairwell access. Thanks again to Aubertine and Currier Architects, Engineers & Land Surveyors, PLLC for getting us to this next milestone, including managing the bidding and selection process – they have been great partners! I am including photos of the Herald House/Thousand Islands Inn through the years...

We have saved some wood tables and chairs from the TI Inn dining room, as well as a large bench that (we think!) was in the lobby area. Our plan is to have them refinished and use them in the restored building. Can anyone recommend someone to refinish this furniture? So far we have only been able to find companies in Syracuse.

Walking past this old building, it's easy to only see the decades of wear, but beneath the peeling paint, the soul of this building is still here and waiting to be found. We are only just beginning to bring this landmark back to life. Follow along to see how we re-imagine this piece of history!
