Does your family include someone with special needs?

The Clayton Police Department's Special Needs Registry (SNR) and the City of Clayton Fire Department Special Needs Tracking and Awareness Response System (STARS) help first responders provide informed, compassionate assistance during emergencies.

The SNR is a secure, voluntary database that helps officers better recognize and respond to individuals with special needs, including those living with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Alzheimer's disease, dementia, Down syndrome, epilepsy, and other conditions.

Participants may also choose to share information with the CFD's STARS program, which provides firefighters and paramedics with important medical information during emergency calls. This can be especially valuable when a parent, caregiver, or regular caretaker is not present.

The registry is open to individuals of all ages and is designed to help first responders better serve our community when every second counts.

Memorial Day marked the unofficial start of summer and a reminder of the importance of safe driving. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that this year, eight people lost their lives and 99 others were injured in 234 traffic crashes on Missouri roadways over the holiday weekend.

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for American teens. The period between Memorial Day and Labor Day is also known as the "100 Deadliest Days" because crash rates increase significantly, especially among teen drivers. Let's change the statistics this year!

Parents can help by:
- Setting clear driving rules and expectations
- Requiring seat belt use on every trip
- Limiting distractions such as cell phones
- Talking about the dangers of speeding, impaired driving, and drowsy driving
- Modeling safe driving habits every day

Teens:
- Buckle up every trip
- Put your phones away while driving
- Never drive impaired or ride with an impaired driver
- Speak up if a driver is taking unsafe risks
- Stay alert and watch for hazards

A safe summer starts with responsible choices behind the wheel. Together, we can help prevent crashes and save lives.
