A few of our firefighters stayed well into the night assisting Department of Forestry with the fire at Calamity Beach on Saturday. While it is unknown how the fire initially started, it did end up turning into a control burn at the discretion of the Department of Forestry.

We are still under a burn ban, meaning there is a legal restriction on all outdoor burning including fire pits, campfires and trash piles. Many people don’t realize that fire embers can travel 1 to 2 miles depending on the weather and environmental conditions. So while a small campfire or fire pit may seem harmless, it can turn into a much larger problem.

Just a reminder that we are still under a burn ban! We responded to 2 calls this morning regarding folks burning.

We also want to thank Department of Forestry and Oakland Promise Land VFD for helping us with a wildfire at Calamity Beach.

It was a perfect night for deck gun and lake pump training at the lake. We had 15 firefighters, 2 new firefighters and 3 future fire fighters in attendance.

While this training is something that has been done before, a handful of us learned a new lesson this evening. Don’t stand or leave your windows down if you are down wind of the deck gun. 💦 ☔️

We would also like to give a big thank you to Darren Roberts for coming out and leading our training this evening.

The weather is great today, and people are definitely taking advantage of it. Our department and firefighters have already been notified of 4 different control burns happening in Clarkridge . Between those and the prescribed burns happening along the Buffalo River, you can expect the air to be a little smoky.

The sky is hazy from smoke and you can smell burning in most areas. If you do see flames and are concerned, please try to be as accurate as possible with the location when you call 911. We have already been out to investigate a few calls received and they have been fully under control.

If you plan on burning today, please call our department so we can be aware and notify 911. And please be safe.

We are officially under a winter storm warning and an extreme cold warning! Heading to the grocery store is usually the first thing people think of when preparing for bad weather, but there are a few things we would also like to remind you.

*Ensure you have a SAFE way to stay warm. Using charcoal, propane or gas grills and stoves inside to stay warm should never be an option.

*Charge all phones and electronics at the start of the storm and use sparingly in case power does go out.

*Pick up any prescriptions or medical necessities today or tomorrow morning.

*Fill your vehicles up with gas. If the power does go out, you can use your vehicle to charge your phone and get warm if needed.

*Stay home!! It’s easy to say “I can drive in this”. And maybe you can, but what’s the point? The whole town will be shut down, and there is no reason to risk it.

*If you do go outside to shovel, sled, make snowmen, etc please wear appropriate clothing and limit time outside. The extreme cold can sneak up on you fast.

*And last, don’t use yellow snow to make snow ice cream!!!!

We are having some interesting weather for January and while it may seem like a great time to do some yard work and get some burn piles taken care of, please be aware that it is extremely dry out and the wind has been unpredictable. Although there is not an official burn ban in place, we advise that you be very cautious about burning.

*Regardless of the time of year, anytime you plan on doing a control burn please notify the CVFD prior so we are aware.

There are alot of superstitions regarding ways to ring in a great new year:
- eating 12 grapes under your table at midnight
- open your doors and windows at midnight to air out your house
- eat black eyed peas
- sweep your front porch and sprinkle cinnamon
- don’t do laundry or clean house on New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day (my personal favorite, just in case you are wondering 😊)

While none of those are guaranteed to work, there is one sure fire, guaranteed way to ruin your new year. Drunk Driving! If your New Year’s Eve celebrations include alcohol, please stay where you are until tomorrow, call a friend, call a cab or even listen to Tracy Byrd and learn how to do the Watermelon Crawl. Whatever you do, please don’t choose to drink and drive.

Have a safe and happy new year from all of us at Clarkridge Volunteer Fire Department.

Our CVFD family celebrated the holidays together this past Thursday with a dinner, fun gift exchange game and even a quick interruption when they were dispatched out for short while.

This holiday season make sure to thank your local volunteer firefighters, first responders and law enforcement. Our community wouldn’t be what it is without the service of these men and women.
