Thank you to everyone who came out to the 2026 Mountain Laurel parade on Saturday.
The Old Clarkesville Cemetery offered a throwback to the vintage pull along float style from years ago.
Thanks to those who helped to illustrate the vision, especially Clarkesville council member Don Nix and designer Brooks Garcia.
We honored our single documented Revolutionary War soldier J. D. McCroskey, interred in an unmarked grave.

We made the front page!
🪦
Pick up a copy of The Northeast Georgian to read about our new mobile tour app, thanks to the support of the Citizens of Georgia Power Legacy Grant, the City of Clarkesville, and software engineer Jackson Gresham for helping launch it.
The app is available for free on Apple and Google Play, with a browser version also available.
Stop by the cemetery from noon to 3 p.m. during Mountain Laurel to learn more.
Grateful to Samanta Sinclair for her commitment to sharing our story!

Visitors to the Old Clarkesville Cemetery may now read and hear the history buried beneath the hemlocks as they walk the grounds.

The Historic Clarkesville Cemetery Preservation Board has developed an app to guide tours around the cemetery.

Don’t miss this year’s Mountain Laurel parade to see the return of an early style pull along float! 🪦
We thank board member Don Nix for the impetus to spark this return to the past.

Clarkesville’s first worship space was on the cemetery site from 1831-1881 before the building was moved to Washington Street. The chapel served the congregations of Methodists, Episcopalians and Presbyterians.
We’ve just installed a bell to evoke this bit of history.
🔔
The original chapel is described below:
The lovely church once stood amid the majestic oaks. The walls of the building were white, while the woodwork and old-fashioned benches were in plain drab coloring. A gallery ran along three sides of the church, with one aisle down the center to the pulpit. The two rows of windows gave light during the day and the building was lighted by candles at night which were borrowed from house to house.
Thanks to Susan Gwaltney for the donation of the bell and to board member Brooks Garcia for building and painting the post, getting the bell ready and installing this new feature.

This Earth Day, we honor the quiet beauty and living legacy of our rural garden cemetery. 🌿

Here, history and nature grow side by side – towering trees, native wildflowers, birdsong, and the stories of those who came before us. It’s a place of remembrance, reflection, and renewal.

Today, we celebrate the land we care for and recommit to preserving its natural beauty for generations to come. Whether you visit to learn about our early residents or simply to walk beneath the native Hemlocks, you are part of this living landscape.

🌎 Take a moment today to appreciate the earth beneath your feet—and the life it continues to nurture.
