How do we mark the transition from one chapter to the next? For NRCCS, it’s through meaningful, experiential learning. Our 8th-grade students recently completed their annual multi-night raft trip, exploring the Gates of Ladore Canyon— a culminating event that celebrates years of outdoor education and personal growth. This kind of immersive experience fosters grit, teamwork, and leadership skills that serve students long after graduation.

How do we make abstract math concepts stick? Our 7th grade NRCCS students applied scale, perimeter, area, and volume in a project-based learning unit by designing and constructing “gingerbread houses.” A panel of volunteer “elves” evaluated final products—combining authentic assessment with creativity and teamwork. Result: deeper conceptual understanding and high student engagement. How are you using project-based approaches to teach complex skills?
