Premier Host Homes delivered pizza's to the Sheriff's Office today to help celebrate National Police Week. We appreciate the community support as well as the positive attitudes we were met with. Small tokens of appreciation like this are a reminder of what makes our local communities great to live and work in.

In 1962 President John F. Kennedy created National Police Week and marked May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day.
National Police Week is an opportunity to celebrate those who serve and protect our communities as law enforcement officers as well as those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in service to their community.

Join us Wednesday May 13th at 2:00 PM at the Clarinda Cemetery where we will join the Clarinda Police Department in their annual memorial service.

This week, we honor the dedicated men and women of Corrections who work behind the scenes to keep our facilities safe, secure, and running smoothly.

Corrections professionals rarely receive recognition, yet they bear some of the toughest responsibilities in public safety — managing high‑stress environments, maintaining order, and ensuring the well‑being of those in their care. Their work is essential, often unseen, and always deserving of our gratitude.

To our Jailers and Corrections staff:
Thank you for your professionalism, your resilience, and your commitment to serving Page County with integrity. Your efforts make a difference every single day, and our community is safer because of you.

Happy National Correctional Officers & Employees Week. We appreciate you more than you know.

Today the Page County Sheriff's Reserve Deputies stopped by PageComm to deliver flowers. April 12–18 is National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week. This week provides an important opportunity to celebrate and thank the individuals who dedicate their lives to serving the public through their work in emergency communications. These professionals are the first point of contact for anyone seeking emergency services—whether for EMS, Fire Departments, or Law Enforcement—and they play a critical role in ensuring help reaches those who need it most.
Public safety telecommunicators are often the unseen heroes of every emergency response. They gather essential information, provide calm reassurance during moments of crisis, and coordinate the efforts of multiple agencies with precision and professionalism. Their work requires patience, resilience, and a steady presence, even in the most stressful situations.
To those who have chosen this path of service: thank you. Like all who serve within the realm of public safety, you make sacrifices—both visible and invisible—for the well‑being of your community. Your calm is contagious, your dedication is unwavering, and your support is vital to our mission of serving the residents of Page County. We are grateful for the work you do, the burdens you carry, and the lives you impact every single day.

On this date in 1943, Page County Sheriff Cecil Crawford was shot and killed in the line of duty.
Sheriff Crawford had no way of knowing that day would be his last. Like so many in this profession, he started the day prepared to serve his community and carry out his responsibilities.
Alongside a deputy and a constable, Sheriff Crawford responded to assist with taking a young man into custody for transport to the state hospital for a re‑commitment. While inside the home, Sheriff Crawford followed the young man upstairs, where the individual opened fire, discharging five rounds at the officers. Two of those rounds struck Sheriff Crawford, who died in the arms of his deputy as the suspect fled through a window into the nearby woods.
Sheriff Crawford lost his life performing a duty that law enforcement officers continue to carry out to this day. His sacrifice is a solemn reminder that in this profession, the human element can never be fully predicted or controlled.
We honor Sheriff Cecil Crawford’s service, his courage, and the ultimate sacrifice he made for Page County.

Training is underway. Our K9 team of Deputy Powers and Bella are putting in work. Together they will be a formidable force for the good of our communities.
Drug detection, tracking and evidence recovery training will keep these two busy for a few more weeks. As they train and grow their skills, they are building a foundation that will serve the people of Page County for many years to come.

Last week, our deputies visited South Page Schools for Crafting with Cops. They spent the afternoon creating crafts alongside students and even joined in for a few games. We are always grateful for opportunities to connect with local youth and strengthen the communities we serve.

Every individual who wears the badge and uniform accepts that there is a cost to serving their community. That cost is seldom known in advance. It may come in the form of time away from family, missed birthdays and anniversaries, or a shift in how one sees the world. These sacrifices are embraced as part of our duty.
Yet some are called to pay a far greater price. Today, we honor a man who made the ultimate sacrifice and gave his life in the line of duty.

On February 12, 1921 Page County Deputy Sheriff Albert Patton was shot and killed by two men he was attempting to arrest for armed robbery. Both suspects were apprehended two days later in Phelps City, Missouri.

Both suspects were convicted of Deputy Patton's murder and sentenced to life.

Deputy Patton could not have known that he would lay down his life that day, yet that is precisely what he did. More than a century later, his courage and sacrifice remain remembered and respected.

The last two photos are a swing and plaque on the Wabash Trace. If you follow the Trace South of HWY 2 you will find a swing under a shelter. This swing is a marker of where Albert Patton was killed. If you have a chance, I suggest walking that section of the Trace. When you get to the swing, have a seat and consider the sacrifice Albert Patton made trying to bring two criminals to justice.

The Sheriff's Office is pleased to have partnered with Clarinda Elementary for Career Week. We had an opportunity to discuss what it is like to work in Law Enforcement with dozens of interested kids. The kids asked thoughtful questions, explored some of the equipment we use, and gained a better understanding of how deputies work every day to keep the community safe.
We appreciate the opportunity to build positive relationships with young people and highlight the importance of service to our community as well as teamwork.
