Honoring Our Fallen: Wreaths Across America Returns to Historic Little Rock National Cemetery
As the holiday season approaches, many families are preparing for celebrations, but for some, it’s also a time to reflect and honor the sacrifices made by those who served our country. In a cherished annual tradition that embodies the spirit of remembrance and gratitude, Wreaths Across America is once again calling on Arkansans to help honor the veterans laid to rest at Little Rock National Cemetery. With a goal of placing 22,000 wreaths this holiday season, the initiative seeks to ensure that no hero's sacrifice goes unrecognized.
The Little Rock National Cemetery, steeped in Civil War history, stands as a testament to both reconciliation and remembrance. Unknown to many, the land surrounding the cemetery was once a Union encampment. The cemetery itself was originally part of the Little Rock City Cemetery, purchased by the federal government in 1866. It became the final resting place for Union soldiers who died in Arkansas. On April 9, 1868, it was officially designated as a National Cemetery, and an additional 3 acres were added.
The cemetery's unique history reflects the healing of a once-divided nation. In 1884, an 11-acre Confederate cemetery was established adjacent to the National Cemetery. Though the two cemeteries remained separate, they were combined in 1938, and both Union and Confederate soldiers continue to rest in their their respective Union and Confederate sections—a powerful symbol of national reunification.
Through the years, the cemetery has grown to meet the community's needs. A significant expansion occurred in 1990 with the acquisition of land from the Oakland-Fraternal Cemetery, followed by a one-acre donation from the city of Little Rock in November 1999. Today, the cemetery encompasses 31.7 acres and contains over 25,172 interments. This historic site, listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1996, is now closed to new interments but continues to serve as a sacred ground of remembrance.
This year, Wreaths Across America will once again bring the community together to ensure that every veteran laid to rest at Little Rock National Cemetery is remembered. For just $17, individuals can sponsor a wreath to honor a veteran during this year's ceremony. Currently, 4,238 wreaths have been sponsored—less than a quarter of the 22,000 needed to commemorate every hero at the cemetery. The organization's mission, encapsulated in the words "Remember, Honor, Teach," seeks to ensure that the memory of these veterans lives on through this meaningful holiday tradition.
