If you’ve earned experience, share it. If you’re learning, ask questions. We all grow together.

🔥 How Fire Departments Contribute to the ISO Rating

The Insurance Services Office (ISO) evaluates communities through the Public Protection Classification (PPC) program, which measures fire protection capability on a scale of 1 to 10 — with 1 being the best and 10 meaning the community’s fire protection doesn’t meet ISO’s minimum standards.

The fire department plays a major role in this score. ISO looks at four key areas:
1. Fire Department (50% of the total score)
• Number, type, and condition of fire apparatus
• Training programs and frequency
• Staffing levels and response times
• Fire station locations and coverage area
• Equipment maintenance and testing records
• Automatic/mutual aid agreements
2. Emergency Communications (10%)
• 911 dispatch capabilities
• Communications equipment, redundancy, and alerting systems
3. Water Supply (40%)
• Availability, condition, and flow capacity of hydrants
• Distance between hydrants and buildings
• Water system testing and maintenance
4. Community Risk Reduction (bonus credit)
• Fire prevention inspections
• Public fire education programs
• Fire investigation efforts

By maintaining well-trained personnel, up-to-date equipment, reliable response times, and accurate records, a fire department directly strengthens the community’s ISO rating.

🏘️ How the ISO Rating Affects the Community
1. Insurance Premiums:
• A better ISO rating (closer to Class 1) often leads to lower property insurance rates for homeowners and businesses.
• Poorer ratings can result in higher premiums, since insurers see greater fire risk.
2. Community Growth and Investment:
• Businesses and developers are more likely to build in areas with strong fire protection and lower insurance costs.
• Good ISO ratings make a community more attractive for economic growth.
3. Public Safety:
• The improvements that lead to better ISO scores—training, staffing, water systems—also improve real-world emergency response and safety.
4. Community Pride and Trust:
• A good rating reflects the department’s professionalism and the community’s investment in fire protection.

Example

If a department improves from a Class 6 to a Class 4, insurance companies may reduce rates for property owners, saving the community thousands of dollars annually—while also ensuring better-trained firefighters and faster, more reliable responses to emergencies.

Thanks for everything Mark Hamner.
