Hey Claremont Dems!

As the semester wraps up, we hope you are taking care of yourself and focusing on school. However, down the 210 Freeway, there's a SUPER important emergency congressional election to replace (D-CA) Katie Hill on May 12th (a week from TODAY). If you have extra time on your hands, please consider taking 20 minutes to phone bank for State Assemblywoman Christy Smith. You can find events happening throughout the week, or phone bank on your own: https://grassrootsdems.org/events/

As the Democrats of the Claremont Colleges we strive toward a Democratic Party that is committed to human dignity and justice for all peoples. That is why we are joining J Street U Claremont Colleges in calling for the Democratic Party’s platform in 2020 to include a commitment to Palestinian rights along with its continued commitment to Israeli security. This must expressly include clear opposition to the ongoing military occupation of the West Bank, settlement expansion, and the unilateral annexation of territory in the West Bank as advocated for by the current Likud government.

In the current platform, the Party states that “Democrats believe that cooperation is better than conflict, unity is better than division, empowerment is better than resentment, and bridges are better than walls.” The only way to truly live those values is to commit to protecting the rights of Palestinians. Vague statements of support are not enough; we need specific action. We stand with J Street U in their fight for our party platform to acknowledge and denounce the occupation of the West Bank. If you have any questions about this position, please feel free to contact our board members.

Hey Dems! If you are planning to vote in the Primary Election on March 3rd and are a registered voter in Claremont, see below!

We know a lot of students want more information about the local candidates. The list below are the candidates that the Claremont City Dems club recommends. While we are not directly affiliated with them, we appreciate their input and thought you might as well!

CLAREMONT VOTERS GUIDE
MARCH 3, 2020 Primary Election

The following guide has been approved by the Executive Board of the Democratic Club of Claremont.

For most of the races, the board has agreed with and accepts the recommendations of the Los Angeles County Democratic Party.

In the matter of Judicial Office 72, while the LACDP recommends Stephen Morgan, the Executive Board of the DCC and the DCC itself has endorsed Myanna Dellinger. The board has conducted an interview, reviewed her literature and recommended her to the full membership – she made a brief appearance before the members and the club voted to endorse her. She represents the values of the Democratic Party.

For the LACDP Central Committee, the board has endorsed Debi Evans and Joe Salas (both DCC members). In the interest of having Claremont (the often-forgotten eastern most city in the 41st AD) represented on the county committee, we recommend voting only for the Claremont candidates.

Note: the Executive Board intends to fully review its policies and procedures about Judicial endorsements prior to the next election.
