Young Progressives Demanding Action: Claremont

Young Progressives Demanding Action: Claremont YPDA is building a permanent progressive movement fighting for justice at the local, state, and congressional level. [email protected]

We are composed of young progressive organizers linked to Progressive Democrats of America (PDA), activists whose primary goal is to advance the progressive agenda in Washington. We are focused on the progressive platform that unites us, a living people's platform. We organize, agitate, and influence through an inside outside strategy that necessitates students and their political power. We organi

ze from the bottom-up from every district to statewide party structures to the corridors of power in Washington. We agitate for progressive change through persistent disruption of the flow of politics as usual. We influence through a seat at the table. Goals:

1) Political Education

Registering voters identifying with all parties and candidates and aid in the process of getting absentee ballots and following through with voting processes in an effort to increase voter turnout of young people in our area. Educating students as to why civic engagement through local and state action matters through a connection to progressive issues. Conducting teach-ins on the importance of fighting for universal basic rights such as healthcare for all, high quality education, a habitable planet, a living wage, and affordable housing. Running webinars to disseminate information on causes throughout the country to connect the dots between issues and action that is happening on campus and throughout the community.
2) Building Student Centered Progressive Policy

Issue organizing teams (IOTs) led by students highlighting the Movement for Black Lives, Debt and Equity in Higher Education, and Path to Citizenship. Joining PDA IOTs such as Healthcare Human Right, Stop Global Warming, Voter Protection & Election Integrity, and Economic and Social Justice and participate in monthly conference calls. Tweeting at representatives and participating in monthly student letter drops to Congressional reps in their local offices to urge co-sponsorship and yes votes on bills the teams have endorsed in person.
3) Creating a lasting bridge between college students and political power

Actively participating in monthly progressive roundtable with members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. Connecting politicians, leading activists, and cause experts to students to foster dialogue between college organizers and those in power. Training students on different ways to be engaged in politics through press, campaigning, public service, and beyond to get a permanent seat at the table and a new generation of leaders. Mentoring young progressives through knowledge sharing and creating a culture of collaboration.

The sidewalk outside the district office is private property, and we would have to contact the property managers to get permission or we risk getting police called on us. The District Representative has agreed to meet a delegation, but he only has space for 8-10.

If need be, we will rally on a later date. For now, since we already have his ear, we can escalate as needed later!!

This is a call to action for the Claremont community to support California's immigrant population.

Our Assemblymember, Chris Holden, has yet to announce support for SB 54 and SB 6. SB 54, the California Values Act/"Sanctuary State" bill, prohibits state and local law enforcement from cooperating with immigration police in a variety of ways (though they can still cooperate in deporting violent felons). SB6, the Expanding Due Process Act, allocates $12 million dollars for a legal deportation defense fund for undocumented Californians.

These are INCREDIBLY important bills for protecting our undocumented Californians, upholding their rights and dignity as individuals, and ensuring that California remains a beacon of justice and tolerance in the United States.

The Damage Control Action Network (DCAN), a Claremont Colleges student group dedicated to fighting Trump at the local level, is organizing a community rally and delegation outside of Chris Holden's Claremont office. Other important progressive organizations in our community, such as Indivisible Claremont and Move Forward, shall come out to support immigrants too - as well as many other parts of our community. We hope to invite local media and showcase supportive speakers representing various cross sections of the community (undocumented and immigrant, faith, students, faculty, labor, activists, etc.). We will then send in a delegation which will discuss the two bills with Holden's staff.

We will request that they publicly address our assembled community regarding the bills, arrange a meeting between our groups and Chris Holden, and most of all, that Chris Holden SUPPORT these two bills in Assembly, and convince his committees and caucuses to join in.

Please come out to support the immigrant community of California, and let us know if you represent a community in Claremont and would like to speak. We must stand together in support of concrete legislation that will work to further shield immigrant communities from the worst that the present administration has to offer. Let's show Chris Holden that Claremont stands for immigrant rights!
