**SCAM ALERT – SPOOFED CITY HALL PHONE NUMBER**



The City of Claremont has received reports of scammers spoofing the City Hall telephone number, making fraudulent calls appear to be coming from the City.

If you receive a suspicious or unexpected call claiming to be from the City of Claremont, do not provide personal or financial information. Hang up and call City Hall directly at 828-466-7255 to verify the call.

If you have fallen victim to this or another scam, please contact the Claremont Police Department at 828-464-3112.

Please share this information with friends, family, and neighbors to help prevent others from becoming victims.

The City Planning Department was made aware of a scam emailing fake invoices for Planning Fees from a mock city email address. The invoice is addressed from the Planning Board and uses the City Seal, but is not the invoice template that is utilized by the City. The invoice requests payment by wire transfer. In effort to alert the public, the City would like to post the following reminders:

The City will NEVER ask for payment by:
Wire Transfer
Gift Cards
Cryptocurrency
Cash apps or electronic transfers
The Planning Department will only issue invoices for permits, plan review fees and board review requests (rezonings, variances, etc.). If you have not submitted any applications, the City will not be sending invoices.
Emails containing invoices for payment of fees will come from an email address with the city’s domain (.org)
