Clare-Gladwin CTE

Clare-Gladwin CTE CTE offers Career & Technical training to high school juniors and seniors from Clare, Gladwin, Farwell, Harrison and Beaverton.

CTE in Twenty Seconds
• A generation ago, we knew it as vocational education or skilled trades training
• Finances and logistics have removed most local schools’ ability to offer it; CTE fills that void
• It’s offered to juniors and seniors at high schools in Beaverton, Clare, Farwell, Gladwin and Harrison
• Students get an opportunity to explore many diverse career fields
• Students learn valuabl

e professional and personal skills that help prepare them for life after high school, whether it’s in college, the workforce or the military

Culinary Arts Instructor Heidi Rocha had the opportunity to take four 2nd year students (FHS grad - Bob Hunt & HHS grads - Jasper Caster, Amber Walters, & Alexis Brooks) to attend the National Restaurant Association (NRA) Show at McCormick place in Chicago. The NRA show is the largest Food Show in the world. The trip was paid for by catering profits.

Students experienced professional development, showing student opportunities in the industry, networking with professionals, and learning about products. At the beginning of the show there was a panel of hospitality professionals who shared their stories and helpful tips for getting into the industry.

The group also had the opportunity to explore various attractions and restaurants around Chicago (Navy Pier, Chicago 360, Millenium Park, Museum of Science & Industry).

Finding Her Future in Education Through CTE -

When Sophie Lubs first visited Clare-Gladwin Career & Technical Education (CTE) as a 10th grader, she was drawn to the atmosphere and the opportunity to learn in a more hands-on environment. Now a second-year Education Occupations student, she is gaining real classroom experience that is helping shape her future goals.

Placed in a kindergarten classroom after working with first graders last year, Sophie says seeing how students develop at different ages has changed her perspective on teaching. Through CTE, she has created learning activities, supported reading groups, and worked directly with students — experiences she didn’t expect to have so early.

“I didn’t think I would get the chance to be in a real classroom until college,” said Lubs. “CTE pushed me further into the classroom and let me see what teaching is really like.”

She credits her mentor teacher, Ms. Pung, from Clare Primary School, with helping her understand how important wording and communication are when working with young learners. Beyond the classroom, Sophie also enjoys the new CTE campus, where nearly all programs are located together. Getting to know students from other schools has helped her build friendships beyond her own school and program.

Inspired in part by her mother, who is a teacher, Sophie says her CTE experience has helped confirm that education is the path she wants to pursue. Gaining real-world classroom experience early has given her confidence in her decision and a clearer understanding of what her future in teaching could look like.
