We had a great time joining Mid Michigan College for their first Coffee & Construction event, and what an incredible opportunity it was to see the future taking shape right in our region.

From getting a firsthand look at the new nursing and welding labs to connecting with partners who share a commitment to workforce development, the experience was a powerful reminder of why these investments matter. These spaces aren’t just buildings. They’re pathways for students across Clare County to gain skills, build careers, and stay rooted in our communities.

At the Clare County Community Foundation, we’re proud to support projects that strengthen education, expand opportunity, and create long-term impact. Seeing this work up close reinforces just how meaningful that impact can be.

We’re grateful to Mid Michigan College for the invitation and look forward to continuing this partnership as these projects come to life.

Grant Impact Story

A recent grant from the Clare County Community Foundation is helping Clare Youth Football invest in the safety and development of young athletes across the Clare area.

The grant supports the purchase of new football helmets and shoulder pads, ensuring players have access to safe, up-to-date equipment as they learn the fundamentals of the game. Youth sports programs like Clare Youth Football do more than teach athletic skills. They also help build teamwork, leadership, and a sense of community pride that extends far beyond the field.

“Thank you for funding safe, updated equipment. This grant protects our athletes while strengthening teamwork, leadership, and community pride throughout the Clare area.” - Brad Davis

Investments like this help ensure that Clare County’s young athletes can play, grow, and compete in a safe and supportive environment while building connections that strengthen the entire community.

Recently, eighteen enthusiastic students from Clare, Harrison, and Farwell gathered for the first meeting of the year for the Clare County Community Foundation’s Youth Action Council.

The group kicked off the year by electing new officers and jumping right into a meaningful service project to support the Clare County Animal Shelter. Their teamwork, leadership, and community spirit set a positive tone for the year ahead as they work to make a difference in the lives of both people and animals across Clare County.

A Sunday to Remember: Celebrating Clare County's Future! 🎓

Yesterday, we had the honor of celebrating 47 incredible students from across Clare County who were awarded over $60,000 in scholarships through the Clare County Community Foundation! 🌟

This event was more than a recognition of academic achievement — it was a celebration of the power of community giving. In our very first year, the Foundation awarded just $5,000 in scholarships. Today, thanks to the generosity of local donors, that impact has grown more than tenfold.

We’re proud to say that every scholarship awarded is a result of people just like you choosing to give back. Whether it’s $5 or $50,000, your gifts are invested in the future and vitality of Clare County.

But scholarships are just one part of what we do. Every year, the Foundation distributes over $100,000 in grants to local organizations — from Clare Public Schools to the Farwell Area Historical Museum, from MyMichigan Health Foundation to the Clare County Arts Council. These grants spark creativity, support innovation, and meet real needs in our communities.

Thank you to the Doherty Hotel for hosting us, and thank you to every donor, partner, and volunteer who makes this work possible. 💙

The Clare County Community Foundation Board recently approved three grant requests totaling $31,894.89. Grantmaking from the Clare County Community Foundation is made possible by community members who have contributed to funds that support the charitable, cultural, educational, recreational, and scientific needs of Clare County, in alignment with the Community Foundation's purpose.

The Clare County Community Foundation is committed to the practices of trust-based philanthropy. This framework reflects a commitment to building relationships with nonprofits and making grantmaking responsive to their needs.

"We are grateful to our donors for helping us support Clare County nonprofits," said Tim Wilson, Clare County Community Foundation Board Chair. "These grants represent a wide range of services that support health, education, and recreation throughout the county."

First quarter grants for 2025 include:

• MyMichigan Health Foundation - $18,424

Risk Reduction Education for Diabetes, Heart Disease & Obesity Prevention in Youth

This grant supports MyMichigan Health Foundation in delivering education that promotes healthier outcomes and reduces the risk of diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. The programming, offered free to Clare County residents, includes evidence-based education and screening.

“The Risk Reduction program reaches approximately 300 students each school year and indirectly impacts the students’ households,” said Erin White, Manager of the Diabetes Center for MyMichigan Health. “We aim to encourage youth to take control of their health by engaging in healthy lifestyle choices. Using a curriculum developed by the USDA, we provide hands-on education to empower youth to make healthy food and activity choices,” said White. “The students are challenged to make small changes, such as drinking more water, consuming more fruits and vegetables, or increasing physical activity. These small, but impactful choices can lead to a healthy lifestyle that lasts into adulthood.”

• Little League Baseball, Inc. - $8,500

Clare Area Little League Fence Repair

Funding will assist the Clare Area Little League in replacing fences at its field, helping to provide a safe, welcoming, and functional space for youth athletics and recreation in the Clare community.

“The grant project will have a significant impact on both the Clare area community and Clare Little League by enhancing local youth sports opportunities, improving facilities, and fostering a safe environment for young ball players,” said the Clare Area Little League Board. “By investing in the infrastructure, this initiative will promote teamwork, sportsmanship, and community engagement, ensuring that generations of players have access to quality recreational experiences.”

• Harrison Community Schools - $4,970.89

Outdoor Recreational Opportunities

This grant supports Harrison Middle School’s request for recreational equipment. The new equipment enhances students' physical activity during and after school, providing opportunities to support student well-being and development.

Competitive grants are offered quarterly. Grants are open to all 501(c)(3) nonprofit agencies, public schools, and government entities servicing Clare County. The Clare County Community Foundation receives administrative support from the Midland Area Community Foundation. We're proud supporters of the disc golf course at Farwell Area Schools!

“The donation of this land not only adds to the income of the district but is incorporated in the general science programs in a lot of ways — sustainability, agriculture, ecosystems and such, and also introduces logging and forestry and agriscience as possible career paths,” said Steve Scoville, Superintendent of Farwell Area Schools.

“It checks all the boxes,” he adds. “We want our kids to understand the sustainability piece of it. You know, they may not go into logging or forestry, but even if they become property owners, being able to identify trees and knowing the value of them and how to improve or sustain them is a certain skill set.”

For Farwell Area School students and others, the school forest is about more than forestry and tree management these days. It's also a serene, shaded place to play disc golf, a sport growing in popularity across the country.
