Source separation means placing separating your recyclables, organics, and trash at the point of disposal. While it may seem like a small step, proper sorting reduces contamination and gives these items the best opportunity to be recycled or composted.

It also supports SB 1383 ➡️ When organics break down in landfills, they generate methane, a potent greenhouse gas. With source separation, we produce cleaner compost and recycling, reduce the amount of organics in landfills, AND support California's goals.

Source separation starts with you ♻️

Teaching good sorting habits early helps make them second nature. Whether it’s a lunch wrapper or leftover food, knowing what goes where gives recyclables and organics the best opportunity to be made into something new again.

Properly separating food scraps and other organics also supports CA's SB 1383, which aims to reduce waste in landfills and the methane emissions they produce.

Athens Services kicked off the school year supporting Councilmember Jurado’s Boyle Heights Back-to-School event and the Wilmington YMCA’s Back-to-School Bash.

Together, more than 1,200 families received backpacks, essential resources, and community support. Our volunteer team donated school supplies and provided education on proper source separation at home and in the classroom.

Food scraps are only one part of the organics stream! Flowers, leaves, lawn trimmings, and even oily pizza boxes can go in your green bin. Keeping materials like these out of the landfills helps reduce greenhouse emissions and supports CA's SB1383.
