This "Learn About Day," we’re spotlighting how your food scraps help feed the soil in our communities.

Composting is one of the most effective ways to create a circular system by transforming waste into a valuable resource. Through American Organics, Athens turns food scraps, food-soiled paper, and yard waste into nutrient-rich compost that we distribute through free community giveaway events to support homes, gardens, parks, landscaping, and community programs across Southern California.

Every green bin collected helps divert waste from landfills and supports California’s SB 1383! Here’s two easy ways to help:
• Use your green bin for food scraps and yard waste
• Keep contamination OUT of green containers (no plastic or trash!)

In observance of Memorial Day, Athens Services will be closed on Monday, May 25, 2026.

Service will be delayed by one day during the week of Memorial Day. City of Los Angeles recycLA customers will not be impacted by the holiday schedule.

🍩 Do-nut get confused, that leftover donut belongs in the green organics bin.

Food scraps like donuts, bread, and other baked goods can break down during the composting process. Placing them in the organics bin helps turn food waste into compost that can be used in farming, local gardens, and more!

❗️Per SB 1383, all food scraps, food-soiled paper, and yard trimmings belong in your green organics bin.

Even sweet treats that do not get finished can still serve a purpose.

🍴 Old, rusted utensils belong in the blue recycling bin.

Metal utensils like stainless steel forks, spoons, and knives can be recycled. However, plastic or wooden utensils do not belong in the recycling bin.

If the utensils are still usable, consider donating them so someone else can put them to good use.

Tarps should go in the black trash bin.

Trash bin Why? Tarps are made from durable woven plastics that don’t break down easily and can get tangled in recycling equipment. This can damage machinery and create safety hazards for our employees.

If a tarp is still in good condition, consider donating it. If not, place it is the trash.

Athens Services partnered with to give old uniform polos and work pants a second life ♻️

Homeboy Threads works with businesses to ensure apparel and textiles are put to their best use—whether through reuse, resale, fiber-to-fiber recycling, or responsible disposal.

The polos are being recycled since they’re no longer usable. However, the work pants are still in great condition and are being donated for Homeboy employees to use. 👕
