When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors

Summer officially began yesterday, and according to the National Weather Service (NWS), increases in lightning strikes also peak this time of year!

If you hear thunder, lightning is close enough to strike you. Take a moment during National Lighting Safety Awareness Week (June 21-27) to learn how to stay safe in a thunderstorm with tips from NWS.

Outdoors:
• Move inside a sturdy building or hard top vehicle with the windows.
• Do not take shelter in small sheds, gazebos, dugouts, bleachers, under isolated trees, or a convertible automobile.
• Avoid open fields, the top of a hill, or a ridge top.
• Stay away from water, wet items, and metal objects (such as fences and poles). Water and metal do not attract lightning, but they are excellent conductors of electricity.

Indoors:
• Stay inside at least 30 minutes after you hear the last clap of thunder.
• Do not touch anything plugged into an electrical outlet.
• Use a corded telephone only for emergencies; cordless and cellular phones are safe to use.
• Avoid contact with plumbing; do not wash your hands or take a shower or bath.

Township Offices Closed Today, June 19, for Juneteenth

The newest federal holiday, Juneteenth, honors the end to slavery in the United States. Its remembrance celebration is considered the longest running African American holiday.

In observance of the Juneteenth federal holiday, Anderson Township offices are closed today.

Also referred to as Freedom Day or Jubilee Day, the holiday marks the day that Major General Granger of the Union Army arrived in Galveston, Texas (June 19, 1865) to announce the Emancipation Proclamation’s freeing of enslaved people in the Confederate states was in effect.

Texas had been the last of the Confederate states in which enslavement continued, despite the Emancipation Proclamation to end slavery in 1863 and despite the end of the Civil War on April 9, 1865.

Juneteenth was declared a federal holiday in 2021.

Anderson, Newtown and Mt. Washington residents and businesses celebrate America 250!

You may have noticed yard signs popping up around the area over the last couple of weeks to commemorate the birth of our nation. Interested in one for your home or business?

The Anderson Township Historical Society is working with the Family Pet Center at 6666 Clough Pike, who is offering them for sale for $15. They are also available on Tuesdays, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., at the historical society research center office at 6550 Clough Pike, next to the historic Miller-Leuser Log House.

Walking Down Memory Lane

Anyone remember Linder’s Diner on Beechmont, just west of Paddison Road? It was a favorite place for many locals in the heart of Anderson Township. This photo, taken about 1940, is courtesy of the Anderson Township Historical Society.

Anderson Center’s Plaza Retrofitted as a Community Gathering Spot

Anderson Center’s Plaza, the outdoor space visible from Five Mile Road and Towne Center Way, is now more accessible and comfortable with several new additions.

This Third Place-style plaza has been outfitted with comfy seating, outdoor tables and chairs and decorative lighting. The area is Wi-Fi accessible. A shade sail will be installed at the lake overlook later this summer.

The path around the lake is now fully lighted, making the pathway more inviting for those early evening strolls in the spring and fall when it’s dark before the area closes at 9 p.m.

Third Places are defined as welcoming places outside of home or work where people gather and socialize and experience a sense of belonging.

The upgrades grew out of the township’s vision to create spaces that foster community and improve quality of life for residents and guests.

Community Service Project: Paint a Township Fire Hydrant

Looking for a unique service project, or a neighborhood beautification effort? Help maintain the township’s 2,700 + fire hydrants by providing them with a fresh coat of paint. Your efforts help firefighters do their job. Painting the hydrants helps increase visibility for firefighters who may need to access the hydrants during an emergency.

Anderson Township Fire and Rescue will provide volunteers with paint, a brush and instructions. Call the Newtown Fire Station (Station 22) at 513-688-8093 and ask for the “Fire Lieutenant on-duty”. You may also [email protected]. Volunteers can request to paint hydrants in their own neighborhood or in other parts of the community.

Registration Program Helps Keep Bikes Safe

An average of 175,200 bikes are reported stolen in the United States every year, according to data from the FBI. An estimated 54% of bikes stolen are never reported.

To prevent this type of crime, as well as return bikes that are recovered back to their rightful owner, Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, District 5, instituted a “Bicycle Registration Program” in 2024 for Anderson Township residents.
