Urban League Guild of Greater Southwestern Ohio HISTORY OF THE GUILD
The first Urban League Guild was established in 1942 by Mrs.

The Urban League Guild has three primary roles. 1) To help promote the programs and services of the Urban League. 2) To help raise funds to support the organization. 3) To provide volunteers to help work events and activities the Urban League runs. Mollie Moon to raise funds to support the efforts of the National Urban League. Her untiring efforts generated interest throughout the Urban League mov

ement and prompted other affiliates to organize guilds to help raise money in their own local areas. In 1952, at the National Urban League Conference, the National Council of Urban League Guilds was established. In its seventy year history the Guild has become an integral part of the Urban League Movement. Guild members are considered to be the heart and soul of the Urban League as they fundraise for their local affiliates and contribute thousands of volunteer hours annually. Nationally, there are 80 "financial" Guilds with a combined membership of 8,000 and growing!

We are proud to honor an organization that has stood at the heart of our community for decades.

The 2026 Juanita M. Adams Award goes to the Cincinnati Section of the National Council of Negro Women, Inc. Founded nationally in 1935 by the legendary Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, NCNW has been a powerful force for Black women, families, and communities for nearly a century. The Cincinnati Section, chartered in 1989 and led today by President Danyale E. Marshall, carries that legacy forward right here at home — through S.T.E.A.M. programming, youth development, health and wellness initiatives, and the beloved annual Bethune Height Recognition Breakfast.

Join us July 11 at The Cintas Center as we recognize their incredible contributions.

We are honored to celebrate one of Cincinnati’s own.

This year’s recipient of the Clarise White Award is Aurelia “Candie” Simmons — a native Cincinnatian and lifelong servant-leader who has spent decades turning volunteerism into a life’s calling. From coordinating volunteers at the opening of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center and MLB’s All-Star Game, to preparing meals for homeless youth at Lighthouse Youth Services, Candie has shown up for this city without hesitation. A retired IBM executive, former ULGSO Director of AALDP, Delta Sigma Theta sorority, and Links Alumnae member, she lives by words that say it all: “Fill in the dash between birth and the inevitable. Let your time here mean something.”

Join us July 11 at The Cintas Center as we honor her legacy and everything the Clarise White Award represents.

Guild members Vickie Chenault and Linda Hollins participated in the Talbert House initiative to provide and plant flowers at their Oak Street facility. Talbert House is a non-profit network that provides essential housing, mental health, and community care services to individuals struggling with addiction, homelessness, and poverty.

During the event, Julie from the Civic Garden Center provided instruction and assistance to residents as they planted flowers donated by the Urban League Guild of Greater Southwestern Ohio.

Special thanks to the following members who contributed to this project: Vicki Barker, Bettye Brock, Lisa Carson, Vashti Chatman, Vickie Chenault, Yolanda Ford, Linda Hollins, Saundra Hughes, Karen Jones, MichelleRenee' Norflee, Edith Smith, Jean Taylor, Al Tyree, Judith Tyree, Kamaria Tyehimba, and D. The Urban League Guild of Greater Southwestern Ohio, alongside the Cincinnati Section of NCNW and AARP, proudly participated in a successful voter registration and voter education outreach effort during the Cincinnati-Hamilton County Community Action Agency’s Utilities Resources Fair on May 19.

Volunteers assisted community members with voter registration, updating voter information, and checking registration status ahead of the November election, while also sharing resources from VoteRiders to help remove barriers to voting.

Special thanks to Advocacy Chairperson Edith Smith, Paulette Moore, D. Lyne Watts, Joyce Gaines, Melanie Moon, Danette Ellis, Ms. Diane from AARP, Guild President Al Tyree, and Jeremy Jimmar from the Hamilton County Board of Elections for their support and service.

I was truly honored to represent the Urban League Guild of Greater Southwestern Ohio (ULGSO Guild) during a wonderful weekend of events hosted by the Cincinnati Section- NCNW, National Council of Negro Women, Inc.

Friday evening, I had the privilege of attending the reception honoring Dr. A. Lois Keith, National Chair of NCNW, and it was an esteemed honor to meet her personally.

Then on Saturday, my lovely wife, Judith Tyree, and I attended the 31st Annual Bethune Heights Recognition Breakfast alongside fellow Guilders who are also proud members of the Cincinnati Section- NCNW, National Council of Negro Women, Inc. It was an inspiring celebration of leadership, service, sisterhood, and community excellence.

Special thanks to Danyale Marshall, President of the Cincinnati Section- NCNW, National Council of Negro Women, Inc., for your warm hospitality and continued impact throughout our community.

A beautiful day of culture and connection for the Urban League Guild of Greater Southwestern Ohio!

Guilders gathered at the Cincinnati Playhouse to experience August Wilson’s The Piano Lesson—an outstanding performance that truly inspired us. We then enjoyed great fellowship over dinner at Rusty Bucket in Rookwood, along with special friends of Guilder Doretha Coker Curry.

Special thanks to our Cultural and Social Committee and Co-Chairs, Penny Worsham and Judith Tyree.

Grateful for moments that bring us together!
