We have noticed some misinformation being communicated on some social media sites about Flock cameras. Here are the facts:
Flock cameras are license plate reader (LPR) systems designed to capture objective data (license plates, vehicle make, model, color, and distinguishing features). They are not facial recognition systems.
The system is used strictly for law enforcement and public safety purposes, such as locating stolen vehicles, locating wanted persons, and investigating crimes.
Data is not shared with the general public or private individuals.
Access to Flock data is restricted to authorized law enforcement personnel and is governed by strict user permissions and audit logs.
All searches conducted in the system are logged and subject to review, ensuring accountability and proper use.
Flock Safety does not sell or provide data to non-law enforcement agencies for unrelated purposes.
Data sharing between agencies occurs only with other verified law enforcement agencies for legitimate criminal justice purposes.
The system does not track individuals in real time or monitor people’s movements continuously. It only captures vehicles that pass a fixed camera location.
Data is automatically deleted after a set retention period (typically 30 days), unless it is needed as part of an active criminal investigation.
The use of Flock cameras complies with applicable laws, policies, and constitutional protections, including safeguards against misuse.
In Pierce Township, Flock cameras assisted in solving a bank robbery.
