A grand jury on Thursday indicted City Council member Wendell Young on a felony charge of tampering with evidence connected to the “Gang of Five” — a group of council members who broke the law by conducting public business in private messages during 2018.

'I hate to let anyone down.' Wendell Young doesn't have enough signatures to run for Cincinnati mayor.

Cincinnati City Councilman Wendell Young did not turn in enough valid signatures to run for Cincinnati mayor, he told The Enquirer Monday.

Hamilton County Board of Elections director Sherry Poland said while validating Young's signatures it came to light that one of his signature gatherers lived in Lincoln Heights; signature gatherers must live in the city of Cincinnati, according to the petition language.

In the end, Young turned in 912 signatures, 349 of them valid, including the ones collected by the Lincoln Heights person.He needed 500 signatures from registered Cincinnati voters, according to the city charter.

Had he had enough valid signatures, Poland was prepared to get a legal opinion on the matter of out-of-town people collecting signatures. But it wouldn't have helped, Young conceded.

It's one thing for private citizens to sign the letter. But some who signed the letter are on public boards and committees – and citizens and taxpayers need to know who they are.

• School board President Carolyn Jones and Vice President Ryan Messer; City Councilman Chris Seelbach: Several Democrat elected officials were pressured to sign the letter, including school board member Mike Moroski. But they wisely took a pass. Not so much for Jones, Messer and Seelbach. It's a terrible look for these elected officials to publicly defend a politician who's been charged with the public-office cardinal sin of pay-to-play. Don't forget this, Cincinnatians. The FBI sure won't.

Tim Burke: His signature was a head-scratcher. The widely respected lawyer and former local Democratic Party chairman has always been known as a good-government advocate. The Sittenfeld letter came out a week after Burke was appointed to Mayor John Cranley's anti-corruption task force. How can Burke be asked to help root out corruption at City Hall when he's supporting an allegedly corrupt politician? Cranley must remove Burke from the committee ASAP.

• John Eby: The Westwood civic leader is the vice chairman of the city's planning commission. The commission plays a role in development deals. How council does development deals is at the center of the culture of corruption. Cranley must also remove Eby from the planning commission. The letter surfaced on Monday night. What's the mayor waiting on?
