Stripes & Patches

Stripes & Patches Stripes & Patches is inspired by the striped lord of the jungles and is our small patch that attempts to weave into the larger fabric of conservation.

The idea of Stripes & Patches began in May 2011 at Ranthambore, the tiger heartland of Rajasthan. We are avid animal lovers who were trying to figure out ways to make a difference to conservation efforts and chanced upon a course conducted by Tiger Watch, a Ranthambore based NGO. The week long course exposed us to how complex the problem of conservation was, and provoked more questions than provid

ing answers which probably was what Dr. Dharmendra Kandhal, who heads Tiger Watch, intended for to achieve. Tiger Watch followed a two pronged approach to saving the tiger - on one hand it actively and aggressively cracked down on poachers while on the other hand it sought to understand and address the socio-economic causes that drove many of the local Mogiya tribals to become poachers. Dhonk, headed by Divya Shrivastava works with Tiger Watch and attempts to provide locals with alternative livelihood which would then wean them off the need to exploit the forest and its denizens. The efforts of Tiger Watch and Dhonk are yielding real results at Ranthambore. Our experiences with both these organizations coupled with our entrepreneurship zeal sparked the creation of Stripes & Patches. Through Stripes & Patches we want to create a self-sustaining platform that showcases products that are made by people who otherwise are dependent on the forest as a primary source of their livelihood thereby reducing the pressure on the already threatened forest cover and wildlife. Through these products we also hope to spread the message of conservation because in our heart we believe that if the tiger goes, we will go too. Divya & Sachin

“The air we breathe and the water we drink stem from the biodiversity of the universal environment and its economics. The tiger is at the center of this truth. If it goes, we go!”

Proof that everyone can make a difference and have an impact! Hats off to the determination & persistence from everyone at Wildlife SOS to rescue Mohan! Let this inspire all of us! One kind act at a time ...

MOHAN UPDATE! At the stoke of midnight (India time), Mohan entered the Wildlife SOS Animal Ambulance for his final ride to freedom. The majestic fellow gobbled fresh bananas and was shown some love by the official WSOS Mohan Freedom Team before the ambulance doors were closed. Now he is officially on his way to the Elephant Conservation and Care Center in Mathura. So mark the first minutes of September 22 on your calendars as Mohan Independence Day!

A long battle finally won !! is home where he belongs !
Just another event to remember never give up and there is always light at the end of the tunnel , no matter how long !

Many of you have graciously had your profile photo set to "Free Mohan." The time has finally arrived to change it!

This is our way of telling you that WE HAVE WON! Mohan has been loaded onto the truck and is now speeding his way to our rescue center where he will live the rest of his life as a FREE ELEPHANT. We shall give you some time to let this incredible news sink in and to run and grab a box of tissues to wipe away the happy tears!

We know how long you have waited for this moment, so we will be posting regular updates of his journey.

On behalf of Mohan, we thank you for standing by him all these long months and never giving up.

Go wild ... say no to captivity!

For the last few weeks we have reported very little on the court battle to maintain the freedom of the Precious Four. It is with the heaviest heart that we bring you the latest update. Although India has made great strides in advancing the welfare of animals that suffer brutally, in the case of the Rambo circus elephants we have seen injustice at its worst. The court issued an order that all four elephants rescued from Rambo Circus be returned to the circus immediately which is dreadful. This decision impacts each of the elephants regardless of their current debilitated state and compromised health -- not to mention the cruelty they have already suffered at the hands of the circus.

How is this happening? The foundation for this decision rests on procedural flaws committed by the enforcement authorities during confiscation of the elephants. The decision does not even consider the blind elephant Goldie and her abscesses, nor the behavior of all four elephants, which is typical of elephants forced to perform in a circus -- and which indicates years of extensive mental and physical trauma and torture. The court order also did not consider the spiked chains on their legs, their rotting footpads, the overgrown toenails and wounds on their mouths, and the swelling from years of beatings at the hands of the circus. Nor did the court consider the low-quality, dry straw used as food, the elephants being tethered in their own dung and urine, and the fact that they were performed illegally -- with the circus violating multiple guidelines and orders of the authorities.

We are going to fight this injustice to the end in the higher courts! We need you to help us get these elephants the justice they deserve. We ask you to please sign this petition to the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, the Chief Wildlife Warden of Maharashtra, the Police Commissioner of Pune, and the District Collector of Pune. Let them know that it will be a great shame to India if they let cruelty prevail.
