Today, we commemorate Juneteenth by honoring the lives, sacrifices, and achievements of Black Americans in their fight for freedom.

161 years ago today, over two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed in 1863, news of freedom finally reached Texas. Juneteenth demonstrates the disconnect between freedom in law and action. An official declaration of freedom and equality holds no power without enforcement and action. We observe the struggle for freedom in action every day as we confront the false narrative that Black Americans are provided equal opportunities simply because they have equal rights in law.

While celebrating the progress, we will continue to fight against racism in our communities until freedom and equality are realities, not just words.

Today, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine called for the abolition of the death penalty in Ohio. Our executive director, Shannon Hughes, issued this statement.

"Ignite Peace is buoyed by Governor DeWine calling for the abolition of the death penalty today, laying out the harms it causes and all of the ways it falls short of a promise for justice. State-sponsored killing creates lasting trauma for victims’ families, exonerees, prison staff, and communities. It does not deter crime. A justice system that compounds violence rather than healing it does not protect any of us. We are grateful our governor cares enough to interrupt these cycles of violence, and join him in calling on our state legislators to act. Now is the time to end the death penalty once and for all. Through decades of advocacy, our relationships with exonerees, murder victims’ family members, and those with family members on death row have taught us that we all deserve better than this cruel system. Whether through a grassroots ballot initiative or through pressuring our state lawmakers, we have faith that together we can abolish the penalty once and for all."

14 years ago, DACA was born out of the courage and determination of countless immigrant youths who refused to be ignored and made what seemed like the impossible happen.

Today, we are once again joining them in the halls of Congress, in the streets, and in our community, to demand what is long overdue: a pathway to citizenship for all.

Join us!
