It's that time again! The Oak Hills High School Veterans Day Celebration is back up and running this year after our COVID shutdown and we would love to see all of our Veterans back at the celebration on November 7th. The format is the same as previous years with a Veterans meet up at 7:30 AM followed by the student assembly celebration, lunch afterwards with student entertainment and then panel sessions with students for those who are interested.
Please contact the event coordinator, Paul Limpert (Army Veteran) at [email protected] to confirm your attendance and update your information.
We are looking forward to seeing you there!

Dear friends of Oak Hills Community Veterans, I am reaching out today to see if anyone in the community can help with this year's Veterans Day in the area of food or donations to purchase food for our lunch. Jimmy John's has always provided food for our lunch and this year they are able to support but in limited amounts that do not support our total needs therefore for the first time ever, we are having to shop around for options. If you can help, or know of someone who can, please contact Paul Limpert at [email protected] and I will follow up with you or whomever you have a lead on to ensure that our Veterans are well fed after the morning assembly and before the afternoon panels. Continued thanks to Jimmy Johns and thank you all for your support.

Set for six, the empty chairs represent Americans who were or are missing from each of the services – Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard – and civilians, all with us in spirit.

MISSING MAN TABLE AND HONORS CEREMONY

As you entered the room, you may have noticed a special table; it is reserved to honor our missing men.

Set for six, the empty chairs represent Americans who were or are missing from each of the services – Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard – and civilians, all with us in spirit.

Some here were very young, or not yet born, when the Vietnam War began; however, all Americans should never forget the brave men and women who answered our nation’s call and served the cause of freedom in a special way.

Let me explain the meaning of this table, and then join me for a moment of silent prayer.

The table is round – to show our everlasting concern.

The cloth is white – symbolizing the purity of their motives when answering the call to serve.

The single red rose reminds us of the lives of these Americans….and their loved ones and friends who keep the faith, while seeking answers.

The yellow ribbon symbolizes our continued uncertainty, hope for their return and determination to account for them.

A slice of lemon reminds us of their bitter fate, captured and missing in a foreign land.

A pinch of salt symbolizes the tears of our missing and their families – who long for answers after decades of uncertainty.

The lighted candle reflects our hope for their return – alive or dead.

The Bible represents the strength gained through faith to sustain us and those lost from our country, founded as one nation under God.

The glass is inverted – to symbolize their inability to share a toast.

The chairs are empty – they are missing…………….. (moment of silence)

Let us now raise our water glasses in a toast to honor America’s POW/MIAs, to the success of our efforts to account for them, and to the safety of all now serving our nation!

Hello Oak Hills, just a quick reminder that tomorrow is the annual Veterans Day event at Oak Hills High School. All Veterans are welcome to attend. Veterans start to gather for pre-assembly social in the old gym at 7:30 and the assembly runs from 8:30-10 followed immediately by a lunch hour with lunch from Jimmy John's and Bridgetown Fine Meats and Deli. After that we welcome and encourage Veterans to interact with our students by serving on one of the 6 panels we have setup. All activities will be over by 1:20. We hope to see you there

Veterans of Foreign War posts – where members could socialize with other veterans – are rapidly closing across the nation as aging members die and younger veterans choose not to join.
