Another important win in the books! Recently, it was highlighted by the news that the Alexandra Apartments was recently renovated and preserved to remain affordable… Let us tell you something… This was only made possible by the TENANTS! Tenants stood up to stop the foreclosure by forming a Resident Association and working with Legal Aid of Cincinnati and Homeless Coalition. Residents were able to stop the foreclosure process legally and the Walnut Hills Redevelopment Foundation stepped in to buy the building.

This was great news, however, residents experienced multiple power outages and building issues that needed to be addressed ASAP. We worked with residents to reform their Association to bring concerns to management / ownership. This led to better communication from both sides which resulted in the plan to renovate to be shared and followed. Here we are, 8 years later…

This is what happens when tenants stand united for the homes they rightfully deserve. We had countless meetings, cookouts, food drives, health check ins, city hall visits and other actions to keep this building in the community hands. Shout out to Ms Sandy, George, and all of the Alexandra tenants for their organizing and leadership. Thank you to Legal Aid, Walnut Hills Area Council, Walnut Hills Redevelopment, and everyone else who made this possible. In case you missed it. Yesterday, Cincinnati’s City Council passed a very important motion to ensure that our Continuum of Care program (COC) is able to keep people housed and off the streets. This motion directs the City to create a funding reserve of $3.2 million to support 11 agencies that provide housing and services to help thousands of Cincinnati residents exit/stay out of homelessness. This reserve is critical due to expected significant funding delays created by the Federal Government. Thank you to Council for approving this motion. We are continuing talks with the Hamilton County Administration with hopes that they will provide the other $3.2 million to fully fund the gap needed to help our agencies and our residents.

We are also thankful for the collective advocacy efforts of the organizations who will be impacted, Strategies to End Homelessness, and other housing advocates for your work to make this happen. This has been a community effort to help our community!

We loved getting to host our People’s Movement History Tour with our members this past weekend. There’s something powerful about walking the neighborhood together, slowing down, and interacting in real time with the stories that have shaped OTR.

This tour is a two-hour, one-mile experience that starts with a grounding in Cincinnati’s history—from Indigenous roots to immigration, to the systems that have shaped housing and access over the years. From there, we walk through OTR, stopping at key sites to talk about the People’s Movement, community resistance, and how neighbors have worked to stay rooted in place despite ongoing displacement pressures.

Along the way, we also name what’s typically overlooked…things like hostile design, the loss of public space, and the real, lived impact of gentrification. This tour makes you more aware and gives context for the places you see and interact with every day.
