Miami Valley Recollections and Reconnections Miami Valley Recollections and Reconnections is a archaeological project focused on retracing the fo

- The purpose of retracing past archaeologists footsteps is to gather more information or information that may have been passed over in previous excavations. Archaeology as a discipline has moved forward in the last 100 years with improved methodology, technology, and interpretations.

- Descendant communities, particularly American Indians, are central to this project. The cultures that North A

merican archaeologists study are often no their own. They are cultures of American Indian groups that have occupied this land for over 14,000 years. Their voices matter to the investigation, interpretation, and preservation of this site. Euro-american descendants and stakeholders are also important to the mission of this project as they have occupied the land for several years and have insight that archaeologists coming into this area may not have.

- Archaeology is a public discipline, it serves the interests and contributes to heritage building and identity. We encourage all to come explore the archaeological process and explore how archaeologists learn about the past.

Remember the Turpin dig from last summer? The archeological project that started on Anderson Township Greenspace on the former Turpin homestead site resumes this year.  As something new in 2022, volunteers are invited to take part in the process, which starts May 16 and runs through June 17. Ho

We had a great turnout (more than 50 people) on Saturday. Now it's time to think about the NEXT event. On March 5, 2022, we will be holding a show-and-tell event where we encourage you and other members of the community to share what you know. If you—or anyone you know—has found or collected artifacts from the area (or elsewhere in the Miami Valley), we would like to hear more about it, show us your artifacts (if any), and give you an opportunity to share that story. If your family has been in the area for a long time and you have interesting family stories, photos, or have done genealogical work of some kind, we want to learn more about that as well. Archaeologists and historians will be on hand to discuss and record what people bring in.

One of the most important aspects of this project (and one that sets it apart from more traditional academic work) is that we genuinely want to involve local people as partners in sharing what they know and helping to guide our research as we move ahead. This will be one of what we hope will be many opportunities to do so. This event is by appointment between the hours of 10 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. in half hour increments (10:00, 10:30, etc.). To schedule a time please call: 513-688-8444.

The Miami Valley Recollections and Reconnections (MVRR) project has an exciting lineup of events for the next several months.

On Saturday, February 19, 2022, we will be holding an event at the theater in the Anderson Center located at 7850 Five Mile Road. Starting at 10:00 am, we will present brief overviews of what we have learned so far from our fieldwork last summer. We will also be outlining plans for the upcoming field season and related activities such as ongoing exhibit and virtual reality projects.

This event is free and open to the public. Come join us. We would love to see you there.
