Federal hours-of-service (HOS) regulations are crucial for truck drivers and motor carriers. Since the FMCSA's 2020 changes, there have been several significant updates:

30-Minute Break: Now required after 8 hours of driving, not continuous duty hours.

Split Sleeper Break: Revised for property-carrying drivers.

Adverse Driving Conditions: Updated definitions.

Short-Haul Exception: Extended to a 150-air mile radius and 14-hour shifts.

Despite these updates, confusion remains. Richard Malchow from J. J. Keller & Associates reports HOS queries make up about 20% of transportation questions, with nearly half related to ELD use.

In 2023, HOS violations were over 40% of driver-related roadside inspection issues. Common violations include:

1. Log Falsification
Cause: Electronic audits and improper use of “personal conveyance” and “yard moves.”
