Have you ever watched a parent or older loved one struggle with a smartphone—or refuse to use one altogether because it feels confusing, frustrating, or overwhelming?

Across Greater Cincinnati, thousands of older adults are being left behind in an increasingly digital world. Many don't know how to use a smartphone to communicate with family, schedule medical appointments, access essential services, or protect themselves from online scams. Even more heartbreaking, many have no one to patiently teach them.

That's where EngAging Seniors makes a difference.
Our Smartphone Basics for Beginners classes provide a welcoming, judgment-free place where older adults can learn at their own pace, ask questions without embarrassment, and gain the confidence to use today's technology safely and independently.

We are committed to keeping our beginner classes free, so cost is never a barrier for someone who wants to learn. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, we can only do this through the generosity of people who believe every older adult deserves the opportunity to stay connected, informed, and independent.

Learning a Smartphone Shouldn’t Feel Overwhelming

For many older adults, a smartphone may be their first experience with digital technology. That can feel intimidating—and that’s why learning the basics in a comfortable, supportive environment is so important.

Start with the basics. Older adults need simple, hands-on instruction in small groups, ideally with other seniors who understand their concerns and challenges. There’s no need to feel embarrassed about asking questions or learning at your own pace.

A printed guide makes learning easier. Smartphone instructions are often found online or in apps, but many older adults prefer having something they can hold, mark up, and refer to later. Many do not have a printer, and online manuals are often far too long and complicated to print.

You shouldn’t need another device to learn. One shouldn't assume that every senior has a laptop or tablet available to watch an instructional video while practicing on their Smartphone.

Learning from a video can be especially difficult. For someone with vision or hearing challenges, trying to watch a video on one device while following the instructions on a smartphone can be frustrating and confusing.

Everyone should be able to use their Smartphone. Seniors need to learn the accessibility features that can make a smartphone easier to see, hear, and touch. These simple adjustments can make a big difference in confidence and independence.

The goal isn’t to become a technology expert. It’s simply to feel comfortable using your smartphone.

If you are looking for a way to give back and meet some people your own age, please join us!

EngAging Seniors will be volunteering (no standing) the third Tuesday of each month from 10 - 12 PM with a $8.00 lunch at their in-house cafe afterwards.

Share What You've Learned. Make a Difference.

Would you enjoy helping another older adult feel more confident using a smartphone? You don't have to be a technology expert—you simply need patience, encouragement, and a willingness to learn alongside others.

Our Smartphone Basics and other Mobile Digital Literacy classes are built on a simple idea: Seniors learn best from other seniors. That's why we use a "Seniors Guiding Seniors" approach. Our volunteer Senior Guides work with participants in small groups or two-on-one, offering friendly support and encouragement every step of the way.

The best part? More than 90% of our Senior Guides are graduates of our own Smartphone Basics program. They remember what it felt like to be a beginner, making them the perfect people to help others gain confidence.

We aren't looking for technology experts. We're looking for older adults with average smartphone skills and an above-average desire to help others. If you enjoy learning new things, meeting people, and giving back to your community, you may be exactly who we're looking for.

Every volunteer completes our Senior Guide Training program and receives ongoing education and support, so you'll never be expected to know everything. We also conduct background checks on all Senior Guides to ensure a safe and secure learning environment for everyone.

Volunteering as a Senior Guide is a rewarding way to stay mentally active, make new friends, and help other older adults discover that they really can learn today's technology.

FREE! Engaging Seniors is offering Free Smartphone Basics for Beginners Classes on 3 consecutive Mondays from 1:30PM - 3:30PM at The Deer Park Community Center.
Enjoy hands-on, guided practice with structured lab exercises and real life scenarios (communication, safety, emergency, device care) to ensure practical application. Connect with your peers for a fun afternoon of engagement by learning how to gain greater independence and less frustration in daily living.
