Onondaga County Fire Chiefs Association Remembers September 11th
Today, the Onondaga County Fire Chiefs Association our fire service family and communities across the nation in solemn remembrance as we mark the 25th Anniversary of September 11, 2001.
Twenty-five years ago, our nation was forever changed. We remember the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives that day, including the firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMS personnel and other first responders who answered the call without hesitation—many making the ultimate sacrifice while helping others.
We also remember those whose sacrifice continued long after September 11th.
Thousands of firefighters, emergency responders, construction workers, volunteers and others spent days, weeks, months and years working at Ground Zero and throughout the recovery effort. In the years that followed, far too many developed 9/11-related cancers and other illnesses as a result of their service. Many have since lost their lives, and countless others continue their battles today.
As fire service leaders, we have a responsibility not only to remember those who came before us, but to continue looking after the health, safety and well-being of the firefighters and emergency responders serving our communities today.
On this 25th Anniversary, we ask our members, departments and communities throughout Onondaga County to pause and remember every life lost, every family forever changed, and every responder whose sacrifice continued long after the attacks.
