What is happening with your fire protection?
Safety protocol. This phrase is heard mostly in the business sector, because it is usually part of the standard reminders for people who face unusually hazardous situations on a daily basis. Usually it refers to a set of guidelines that dictate certain required precautions, equipment or actions for particular duties, geared to keeping the person performing these duties safe from harm.
Though many types of occupations have them, let me just remind you of a few related to firefighting and it may inspire you to enact or improve your own safety actions.
One of these protocols concerns PPE’s “Personal Protective Equipment”. This protocol requires that you examine the situation and wear the proper personal protective equipment. To fight fire inside a burning structure you would need your bunker gear and your SCBA “Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus. This protects you from heat and gasses and gives you clean air to breath. When on a medical call it could include examination gloves, safety mask, and possibly a full safety suit depending on the situation. For accidents depending on your role it cold be a safety vest, bunker gear, waders, or other specific equipment.
The key to effectively following “safety Protocol” is really simply, to consistently follow it so you have your safety gear in place even when you may not think you need it, so it will be there when you do. Think safety. You may not be able to do it over, but you can always do it right.
