CVFD Retired Spotlight: Battalion Chief Jack Rice

We’re proud to introduce another story in our CVFD Retired Spotlight Series—a series dedicated to preserving the memories, experiences, and legacy of the men and women who helped shape the Chula Vista Fire Department.

At 79 years old, Battalion Chief Jack Rice has a lifetime of stories to share. He joined CVFD at just 21 years old, beginning a career that would span decades of service and countless experiences on the fireground.

Today, Chief Rice’s legacy extends well beyond the fire service. He is a father of 6, grandfather of 32, and great-grandfather of 11.

In this video, Chief Rice takes us back through his career and shares memories from his years in the fire service.

We are honored to hear his story, celebrate his service, and preserve the history of those who came before us.

Their stories are our history. Their legacy is our future. đźš’

Long before today’s engines, equipment, and technology, it was the people of the Chula Vista Fire Department who built the foundation we stand on today.

In this retired spotlight, we hear from former CVFD Captain George Smith as he reflects on his career, the people he served alongside, and some of the fires and experiences that shaped his time with the department.

From historic photographs to memories of working fires, this video offers a look back at a different era of the fire service—and the men and women who answered the call.

We’re proud to honor those who came before us and the lasting legacy they left behind. Their stories are part of our history, and their service continues to be part of who we are today.

🚨 CRITICAL INCIDENT ADVISORY 🚨

Chula Vista Fire Department crews are on scene of a broken gas line on Pacific Hill St. The gas line is actively blowing, and emergency personnel are working with utility crews to safely mitigate the hazard.

⚠️ Please avoid the area until further notice.

🚧 Road Closures in Effect Until Approximately 12:00 PM:
• E. Naples St. & Pacific Hill St.
• Indigo Canyon Rd. & Cloudwalk Canyon Rd.

Please use alternate routes and allow extra travel time. Thank you for your patience as crews work to safely resolve the incident.
