Law Enforcement Responds to Fatal Shooting on Tank Farm Road; Community Safety Secured

POWER COUNTY, Idaho — The Power County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting that occurred on Tank Farm Road on the afternoon of Friday, April 3, 2026. The incident resulted in three fatalities and two injuries. Law enforcement has confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the community.

At approximately 2:38 p.m., dispatch received reports of three people shot on Tank Farm Road in northern Power County. Emergency responders arrived to find two individuals deceased and one injured. The injured person was transported to Portneuf Medical Center via ambulance.

During the initial investigation, authorities located a suspect hiding near the Portneuf River. While at the scene, officers heard additional gunshots and discovered another injured individual suffering from gunshot wounds. That individual was life-flighted to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Deputies attempted to negotiate with the suspect. The suspect presented a threat to deputies, brandishing a firearm, at which point law enforcement responded with deadly force. The suspect died on scene.

The community is safe, and law enforcement remains on-site to process the scene. The names of the deceased and injured are being withheld at this time pending notification of next of kin. No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.

"Our thoughts are with the families of those lost today and those recovering in the hospital," said Sheriff Kasey Kendall. "We are grateful for the quick response of our deputies and regional partners who worked to ensure no further harm came to our community."

The Idaho Falls Police has been called in to lead the Eastern Idaho Critical Incident Task Force investigation into the officer-involved shooting.

The investigation into the original shooting will be led by Idaho State Police, Bingham County Sheriff’s Office, and the Bannock County Sheriff’s Office.

Power County Sheriff’s Office is assisted by the Bannock County and Bingham County Sheriff’s Offices, Blackfoot, Chubbuck, Pocatello, American Falls and Idaho State Police, Idaho Fish and Game, and Portneuf Air Rescue. Pocatello, Fort Hall, and Power County provided EMS and ambulance services.

Please join us in congratulating Officer Jay Alves on becoming our newest defensive tactics instructor, also known as an ARCON instructor (Arrest & Control).

In order to become an ARCON instructor, Ofc. Alves had to obtain an Idaho Peace Officer Standards & Training (POST) High Liability Instructor Endorsement.

This entailed completing 40 hours of instructor development training, 80 hours of ARCON training, and instructing other officers in the presence of an Idaho POST Region Coordinator.

We here at the Chubbuck Police Department are glad to see our in-house ARCON training program expanding, from the addition of our own mat room to adding an instructor who will help bring up our next generation of officers.

Congrats Ofc. Alves, put the mats to use!

The 22-week long program provides students with college level instruction on topics directly related to Police Command Staff Operations. Leadership, human resources, employee relations, organizational behavior, applied statistics, planning & policy development, budgeting & resource allocation are among the topics of instruction.

Lt. Chris Kjos and his fellow classmates graduated from Class #612 after completing over 27 core blocks of instruction. We are proud of Lt. Kjos for both earning the opportunity to attend a command college and for representing our agency so well.

Last night, a silver Kia Sorento, with a 1-year-old child in the backseat, was stolen from a residence located within the City of Chubbuck.

Thankfully, approximately 10 minutes later, the vehicle was found abandoned on Hiline Rd., north of Reservation Rd., by a member of the child’s family and the child was still sound asleep in the backseat.

A police investigation was conducted and a 37-year-old adult female, Rikki Johnson, was ultimately arrested and charged with felony grand theft. Johnson was also arrested on an outstanding misdemeanor drug related warrant.

Additional charges will be reviewed by the Bannock County Prosecutor’s Office. Out of consideration for the involved family and the integrity of this on-going investigation, no further information will be released by this department at this time.

We want to thank the involved family, Bannock County Sheriff’s Office, Fort Hall Police Department, Idaho State Police, and the Pocatello Police Department for their assistance with this investigation.

Again, we are beyond grateful that the involved child was found safe and sound and quickly reunited with family.

Today we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

An American civil rights leader and Baptist minister who, at 39 years old, was assassinated in 1968 due to the major impact his leadership had on the civil rights movement from 1955 up until his death, and beyond.

Please take a moment to watch his "I Have a Dream" speech and try to put yourself in this moment of history. We have come a long way as a country and Dr. King did much to bring us together, helping make a better world for our children.

Thank you Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Please join the Chubbuck Police Department in welcoming our newest, and hairiest, law enforcement officer, Officer K-9 Nelson.

It’s not often we have a one-year-old join the department, but Officer Nelson has proven he has what it takes to join our ranks. He comes to us from “The Next Level Canine Institutes” and he is a Belgian Malinois.

In May of 2025, we asked the Chubbuck City Council to support the Chubbuck Police Department in pursuing the adoption of a K-9 Program, but long before that Officer Nelson’s handler (Corporal Jeremy Kunz) was doing research behind the scenes and pushing the adoption of the program.

Lucky for us, the City Council saw the value the program would bring to our community and backed our endeavor. So, during last night’s Chubbuck City Council meeting, we were proud to introduce Officer Nelson to Mayor Burch and the City Council.

Officer K-9 Nelson and Cpl. Kunz are currently in the process of completing hundreds of hours of Idaho POST certified training together on a variety of topics, such as suspect searches, apprehensions, controlled substance detection, handler protection, obedience, agility, etc.

That’s right, even our furry counterparts have a long list of training they need to complete and we’ve already learned that Officer Nelson doesn’t let anything slow him down. He’s a little spicy! If you see him out in the community with Cpl. Kunz, make sure you say hi, but please ask permission before petting Ofc. Nelson so you don’t surprise him.

A huge thanks goes out to the City Council and Mayor for your continued support. Also, a big thanks goes out to The Next Level Canine Institute for providing Officer Nelson with his initial training and putting him on a pathway to success!

Welcome aboard, Officer Nelson!

On 12/10/25, at approximately 8:52 pm, an adult male ended his own life while sitting in his vehicle as it was parked in the Petco parking lot, located within the City of Chubbuck.

Prior to the incident occurring, the male was driving his vehicle southbound on Yellowstone Avenue, when an Idaho State Police Trooper observed that the vehicle he was driving didn’t have working taillights. The Trooper conducted a traffic stop with the vehicle and the male driver pulled into the nearby Petco parking lot.

The Trooper contacted the male and informed him of the reason for the traffic stop and noted that the subject seemed to be extremely nervous, so he asked him to exit the vehicle. The male refused to exit the vehicle and stated that he did not want to go to jail. He then presented a handgun and pointed it at himself.

The Trooper initially tried to grab the gun and stop the subject, but the male resisted, so the Trooper stepped away from the doorway and the vehicle. Unfortunately, moments later the subject used the firearm to shoot himself.

The Trooper began life saving measures with the assistance of other emergency responders who arrived on scene. The subject was ultimately transported to the hospital via ambulance, but sadly he died. Out of respect for the subject’s family and friends, we will not be releasing his name.

The Chubbuck Police Department is actively investigating these circumstances and has obtained both the involved Trooper’s body-camera video and in-car video. This is an ongoing investigation and no further details will be released at this time.
