Every September, we celebrate Septic Smart Week to bring attention to the importance of properly maintaining septic systems!

Some important reminders include:
- Think at the sink! Be thoughtful about what goes down your drain, avoid harsh chemicals, and use cleaners in moderation.

- Don't strain your drain! Use water efficiently, and stagger the use of water-based appliances to avoid a back-up of your septic system.

- Keep it clean! Test your well water regularly to make sure your water is clean and safe.

- Protect it and inspect it! Regular septic maintenance could save you thousands of dollars and protect public health.

- Don't overload the commode! Toilets are not trashcans- do not dispose of diapers and wipes, period hygiene products, cat litter, or other items down the toilet, as it could damage your septic system.

All of this information and more can be found at epa.gov/septic.

Questions? Contact our environmental health team at 540-585-3300 to learn more about septic systems and wells in the NRV!

September is National Food Safety Education Month!

The four most important steps to handling food safely are:
1. Wash - Wash your hands before and after handling food and after using the bathroom, changing diapers, and handling pets.

2. Separate - Separate raw meats from other foods! This is not only important while preparing food/cooking; it's also important to keep these foods separate in your grocery cart, grocery bags, and in the refrigerator.

3. Cook - Make sure you cook foods to the right temperature. Use a food thermometer to ensure meat, poultry, seafood, and egg products have hit the safe internal temperature to destroy any harmful bacteria.

4. Chill - You should always refrigerate or freeze your perishable foods within 2 hours of cooking to keep it in the safe temperature. Also, never thaw frozen food at room temperature on the counter - the only safe ways to thaw food are in the refrigerator, in cold water, and in the microwave.
