The Montgomery Museum serves the community not only through exhibits and programs within the museum, but also by bringing local history directly to audiences throughout the region.

Community outreach and speaking engagements allow the museum to connect with community members in meaningful and accessible ways while sharing the importance of preserving Montgomery County’s history and culture. Photographed here is a special pop-up exhibit on coal mining on the Huckleberry Trail!

AARP, Kiwanis, Rotary, and other local organizations often receive speeches and programs from Museum staff that encompass topics ranging from current exhibition and preservation initiatives, to local area history.

Virginia, as well as Montgomery County, is celebrating a 250th anniversary this July - and as the Montgomery Museum, we’re holding a special exhibit and celebration of this rich history.

Our Montgomery County 250 exhibit explores the history and development of the county and the surrounding Appalachian region. Beginning with the Revolutionary era and the formation of the county in 1776, the exhibit traces how landscape, transportation, agriculture, and industry shaped the growth of communities over time. Together, these stories reveal a region shaped by both its landscape and the diverse people who called it home.

The opening reception for this exhibit, as well as the ribbon cutting for our new lift to the Community Room, will be on June 24 from 4 - 6pm. Make sure to join us for this special celebration!

Though people often think of scholarly lectures and quiet observation when it comes to a museum, we’re working to make history, art, and education more interesting and accessible to the community!

To do so, we’ve had to approach our programming goals in creative ways. We have special pop-up exhibits that are themed towards holidays, such as a Santa Claus art exhibit in December or a Sisters in Black exhibit for Halloween. But in addition to this, our major fundraising events like Heritage Day or our Appalachian Music concerts have taken on new themes and approaches to make them address public interest and the Museum’s own mission.

One of the most important ways the Montgomery Museum serves the community is through creating exhibits that connect local history, art, and shared experiences to the people that live here. Every exhibit begins with a question: “What stories should we tell, and how can we make them engaging to the public?”

Significant amounts of research, community involvement, and thorough design work are essential in transforming historical archives into engaging exhibits that are accessible and interactive to audiences of all ages. As Montgomery Museum continues to expand and grow, we are eager to extend our exhibit schedule and utilize new areas across our Main Street property.

The Museum’s gift shop is one way that we help support community artisans, artists, and authors - and what a fun way to do so! Our gift shop boasts handmade items - anything from pottery, paintings, knitting, leatherwork, wood carving, and so much more. We have books by local authors on all kinds of topics - history, poetry, and more.

By becoming a site where local makers of all kinds can sell and promote their creations, the Museum is actively helping to promote and celebrate regional creativity. Often, we’ve had visitors come into the museum because they heard that we have a specific artist’s work - and they often end up discovering new ones, too! We’re always looking for new artist vendors, so if you are interested in getting involved, let us know!

For over 20 years, the Montgomery Museum has been holding our Heritage Day festival. Heritage Day is one event that celebrates not only the history of our county - but the present as well. This year, we'll be celebrating 250 years of community and food. This annual community event is being reimagined with an expanded focus on Appalachian lifeways and food traditions, bringing even more energy, flavor, and hands-on experiences to the heart of town. To donate and help us continue to this tradition, visit www.givelocalnrv.org/organization/Mmah.

Throughout the day, Main Street, Roanoke Street, and our Pepper Street property will transform into a lively gathering space filled with local vendors, food, music, and activities for all ages. Browse over 40 vendors offering handmade crafts, artisan goods, and unique finds, and enjoy a wide variety of food options, including a pie bake-off competition and bake sale you won’t want to miss.

This year’s event builds on the traditions our community loves, with live music, family-friendly fun, and interactive experiences around every corner. Guests can enjoy expanded children’s activities, including fair and carnival games, a hayride, and hands-on learning opportunities designed to engage and entertain.

Fun for all ages, Heritage Day is a way to demonstrate Christiansburg pride. It’s become a tradition at this point - help us continue it and celebrate our county’s history!

Join the Montgomery Museum to celebrate a full slate of events on June 24 from 4 - 6pm!

At 4pm, a ribbon-cutting held by the Chamber of Commerce will take place for our new ADA accessible lift - and then we celebrate our Montgomery County 250 exhibit, along with the following art exhibits: the Textile Artists of Virginia’s Balance, a theme show on migration, and the plein air artworks made as a part of Arts NRV.

Additionally, the 24th is Giving Day! Our fundraising goal is $65,000 - and we need your help to reach it. Early giving is open now and Giving Day is from noon on June 24 - noon on the 25. You can give at www.givelocalnrv.org/organization/Mmah.

It's a beautiful time of the year in the Montgomery Museum Garden - so make sure to stop by, admire the blossoms, and say hello to a friendly pollinator! The gardens are located at 300 South Pepper Street in Christiansburg and are open dawn to dusk: come anytime to walk in the garden, view the art, or eat lunch at the outdoor tables.

Looking to the future, we’re currently working to improve pathways and signage within the garden, as well as creating a special space just for kids. Help us support the future of the garden by donating at www.givelocalnrv.org/organization/Mmah.

Over the 36 years of the garden’s evolution, volunteers have created a beautiful, well-designed space accommodating: a place for education, including sustainability of regional native plants and the overall environment; the donation of over 150 pounds of produce grown in the garden and donated to food banks seasonally; a space for art exhibits and; a place of respite for the community.
