GRDA is expanding its generation capabilities to meet Oklahoma’s growing energy needs with the addition of Unit 4 at the Grand River Energy Center. The new 426-megawatt natural gas unit adds fast-start generation capacity, helping GRDA respond to changing demand while continuing to provide reliable, affordable electricity for its customers.

As energy demand grows across the state, GRDA continues to invest in a diverse generation portfolio that includes natural gas, coal, hydro and wind, with battery storage also being explored for the future. Unit 4 is part of GRDA’s long-term commitment to building the infrastructure and flexibility needed to serve its customers today and into the future.

GRDA’s $525 million investment in Unit 4 at the Grand River Energy Center marks a significant step forward in supporting Oklahoma’s growing energy needs. The new 426-megawatt, fast-start natural gas unit is the first Mitsubishi Power M501JAC of its kind in the United States to operate in simple-cycle configuration and features hydrogen-capable technology.

Developed in collaboration with Black & Veatch and Mitsubishi Power, Unit 4 provides the flexibility and fast start-up capabilities needed to respond to changing demand across the Southwest Power Pool. The project reflects GRDA’s continued commitment to investing in reliable, efficient and resilient energy infrastructure for its customers and the future of Oklahoma.

GRDA recently dedicated Unit 4 at the Grand River Energy Center, a new $525 million investment designed to strengthen Oklahoma’s energy infrastructure. The 426-megawatt, natural gas-powered unit is a first-of-its-kind simple-cycle installation and features a hydrogen-capable turbine, providing GRDA with greater flexibility as energy needs continue to grow.

Unit 4 will help GRDA respond more quickly to changing demand while maintaining reliable service for customers across Oklahoma. As GRDA Executive Vice President John Wiscaver noted, the organization continues to look ahead and invest in the infrastructure needed to support its customers and Oklahoma’s continued growth.

Oklahoma’s long-term water resources were the focus of a recent interim study led by State Representative Carl Newton, examining groundwater availability, drought conditions and future infrastructure needs. Officials highlighted particular concerns in western Oklahoma and the Panhandle, where communities rely heavily on groundwater and declining aquifers continue to raise questions about long-term supply.

During the study, GRDA board member Tom Kimball discussed the potential role of water currently flowing downstream after being used for power generation. While transferring that water to other areas of the state would present significant challenges, it was identified as one possible long-term solution as Oklahoma considers how to conserve, manage and protect its water resources for future generations.

Oklahoma Representative Carl Newton held an interim study examining the state’s water resources and concerns about the long-term availability of groundwater, particularly in western Oklahoma.
