Happy International Day of Charity!

We know... your newsfeed is currently getting absolutely obliterated by every organization on earth asking for money today. But since I have the login for the Station 66 page, you are getting our completely shameless, unfiltered plug.

The North Chittenango Volunteer Fire Company is a certified non-profit charity. We are volunteers. That means when we drag ourselves out of bed at 3:14 AM in the freezing rain because your smoke detector is aggressively chirping (it just needed a new 9-volt battery, we have talked about this), we are doing it entirely for free.

We basically operate on community support, state grants that require an ancient decoder ring to understand, and a highly concerning amount of cheap coffee.

So, if you are feeling philanthropic today and want to keep your money local, consider throwing a few dollars our way. Every cent goes directly toward keeping the big red trucks running, buying gear that keeps us from catching on fire, and funding the sheer amount of razor blades our interior crew goes through to stay OSHA compliant.

Today is National Beard Day, which honestly feels like a highly specific, personal attack against the interior crew here at Station 66.

If you didn't know the tragic reality of fire department grooming standards, our interior firefighters are required to be aggressively clean-shaven. Our SCBA air masks need a perfect, airtight seal to keep us from breathing actual poison. So, instead of looking rugged and heroic, half our roster is forced to respond to emergencies looking like giant, soot-covered toddlers.

Meanwhile, our pump operators and exterior crew get to just stand by the trucks looking like majestic, bear-wrestling lumberjacks. The jealousy inside the firehouse is thick enough to cut with a K-12 saw.

This strict "no beard" policy is also the sole reason our department is currently infested with some absolutely criminal mustaches. We are sorry. We know they are a visual tragedy. It is just our last desperate grasp at rugged individuality. Please do not make eye contact with the mustaches, they feed on fear.

Since we are legally prohibited from participating today, drop photos of your glorious, non-OSHA-compliant facial hair in the comments so we can weep quietly into our razor blades.

The sky is currently treating New York like a personal punching bag, and your local volunteers at Station 66 are trapped indoors, vibrating at a frequency only dogs can hear after consuming our collective body weight in dubious coffee. We are actively staring at the radar waiting for things to go sideways.

Here are our polite, totally rational, and slightly desperate demands for the duration of this weather event:

DO NOT DRIVE INTO THE BIG PUDDLES. We know your vehicle is cool. We know you think you can make it. You cannot. If we have to come fish you out of a flooded roadway, we will rescue you, but we will aggressively judge your life choices the entire time.

GENERATORS GO OUTSIDE. Not in the garage. Not in the basement. Not in the enclosed porch. Outside. In the actual weather. We really, really do not want to drag you out of a carbon monoxide-filled house at 3:00 AM while the wind tries to relocate our gear to the next zip code.

SECURE YOUR TRAMPOLINES. If your backyard bounce-pad takes flight and takes out a transformer, we are going to write a very sternly worded report about it. Keep your outdoor furniture on the ground where gravity intended it to be.

TREAT DARK TRAFFIC LIGHTS AS STOP SIGNS. It is a simple concept, yet we witness the Thunderdome out there every time the grid blinks. Please do not make us untangle your bumpers in the pouring rain.

Stay inside, eat all the snacks you panic-bought yesterday, and stay off the roads so our crews can maneuver safely if we get called out.

Handlines are great. They build character. But have you ever opened up a deck gun and watched a solid stream of water obliterate the very concept of fire? That is the kind of power that keeps us up at night.

We train on flowing water because muscle memory is all you have when the heat is actually on. Whether we are dragging 200 feet of hose through a muddy yard or unleashing the master stream from the top of the engine, we are out here making sure every single drop hits exactly where we tell it to. We do not ask the water to put out the fire. We command it.

Jokes aside, drafting operations are a massive part of what we do. When we are out on a call and hydrants are nowhere to be found, we rely on these portable drop tanks to keep the water flowing and the fire going... wait, we mean the fire OUT.

It takes a lot of coordination to get the drafting process down perfectly, which is exactly why we spend our time setting up our giant, heavy-duty pop-up pool.

It is a scientific fact, backed by decades of rigorous field research at Station 66, the universe operates on one absolute, unbreakable law: The exact millisecond your spoon touches a freshly scooped bowl of ice cream is the exact millisecond the dispatch tones will go off.

It doesn't matter if it's a quiet Sunday afternoon or the dead of night. You sit down with a double scoop of mint chocolate chip, and suddenly you’re sprinting to the apparatus bay trying to decide if "extreme brain freeze" is a valid reason to let someone else drive the rig.

Spoiler alert: It isn't. You just swallow the dairy-induced pain, pull on your turnout gear, and accept that your ice cream will be a sad soup by the time we get back from directing traffic.

We’re going to be honest with you: we are not exactly "emoji people." We prefer things we can actually hold, like heavy hoses, truck steering wheels, and cold turn-out gear. But the social media team insisted we participate to "stay relevant," so here is our highly professional, peer-reviewed translation of a typical call at Station 66:
