The Iron Mining Association (IMA) of Minnesota promotes a healthy iron ore industry that will continue to benefit Northeastern Minnesota as well as the entire state. The association is supported by Minnesota's iron mining operations, supplier businesses within the industry, and businesses and individuals who do not work directly in the industry but want to show their support for this vital Minnesota industry.

Did you know Minnesota’s iron mining industry helps fund schools across the entire state?

Every year, Minnesota schools receive millions of dollars from the state’s Permanent School Fund—and the iron mining industry contributes around 70% of that revenue.

In 2024/25, the fund distributed a record $48.9 million to hundreds of Minnesota schools, supporting classrooms, students, and educational opportunities from the Iron Range to the Twin Cities and everywhere in between.

When Minnesota mines iron, every student in the state benefits. 📚

Today we honor the hard-working men and women who power our industry—the miners, engineers, technicians, truckers, and tradespeople whose skill and dedication keep Minnesota's iron mining industry strong.

“Holy moly!” is the most common phrase we hear as people walk up to our booth at the MN State Fair. It’s fitting, considering we have a 160,000+ pound dipper on display!

Huge thanks to Tracy, Jim, Todd, John, Shannon, Paulette, Peter, Ted, Jay and Fred from Komatsu; Arik from MN Power; and Scott from JADCO for being at the booth earlier this week, sharing their experiences, and making sure visitors enjoyed a piece of iron mining!

Big news! The IMA submitted U.S. Steel’s Taconite Pellets for the Coolest Thing Made in Minnesota contest and we are one of the top 64 contenders! 🏆

Taconite pellets earned their spot for the breakthrough process that turned tough Iron Range rock into a material essential to modern manufacturing—a nod to the grit and engineering behind Minnesota's iron mining industry.
