The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has awarded two construction contracts totaling $46 million to improve State Road (S.R.) 10 (U.S. 90A/Nine Mile Road) from County Road 99 (Beulah Road) to S.R. 95 (U.S. 29) in Escambia County. Due to specific project requirements, the construction along Nine Mile Road has been divided into three segments, which will be referred to as the “project cor

ridor.”

Improvements along the project corridor include:

• Widening Nine Mile Road from two to four lanes between Beulah Road and U.S. 29.
• Constructing a new bridge over Eleven Mile Creek.
• Constructing new sidewalks and stormwater retention ponds.
• Signalization improvements.
• Drainage upgrades.
• Adding buffered bike lanes.
• Noise walls were constructed near Nature Trail subdivision. The planned construction work will enhance safety, improve mobility, and reduce congestion for the estimated 19,000 drivers who travel the roadway daily. In addition, the improvements underway support future economic development opportunities for Escambia County and Northwest Florida. TRAFFIC IMPACTS

• Drivers may encounter temporary nighttime lane closures between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.
• Those located in the vicinity of the new bridge construction across Eleven Mile Creek will hear noise from pile driving during the day. INQUIRIES

KEEP FIRST RESPONDERS, SERVICE PROFESSIONALS SAFE BY MOVING OVER

January is Move Over month in Florida, and the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) and its division of the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) are reminding drivers to Move Over for emergency or service vehicles stopped along the roadway.

Preliminary data from FLHSMV shows that in 2021, there were 191 crashes and more than 14,000 citations issued for motorists failing to move over in Florida.

To comply with the Move Over Law drivers must:
Multi-Lane Roadway:
• Vacate the lane closest to the stationary emergency vehicle, sanitation vehicle, utility service vehicle, Road Ranger or wrecker and always signal the intention to change lanes.
• Slow down to a speed of 20 mph below the posted speed limit if a driver cannot move over safely.
• Be prepared to allow those who are attempting to move over into the next lane.
Two-Lane Roadway:
• Slow down to a speed of 20 mph below the posted speed limit.
• Travel at 5 mph if the speed limit is 20 mph or less.

The Florida Department Transportation and the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSVM) are committed to protecting you on the state’s roadways and providing the information you need to travel safely.
Follow these tips to help ensure we all Arrive Alive this holiday season:
• Never drive impaired. Celebrate responsibly and do not get behind the wheel if you have been drinking or using substances that cause impairment. Plan ahead and find a safe way home every time – designate a driver or use a ride service.
• Buckle up. A seat belt is your vehicle’s most important safety feature. Florida law requires that all drivers, all front seat passengers, and all passengers under the age of 18 wear seat belts or the appropriate child restraints. Seat belts save lives, so buckle up every trip, every time.
• Observe and obey all speed limits. Speed limits may change as you drive through different types of roadways, so make sure you adjust your speed accordingly. In Florida, the limit will never exceed 70 mph.

The legal drinking age in Florida is 21. Anyone under the age of 21 in possession of alcohol can be cited for a second-degree misdemeanor, which can lead to costly court fees, fines, and other lasting consequences. Selling alcohol to anyone under 21 or buying alcohol for anyone under 21 is also a misdemeanor.

Know the facts about alcohol consumption:
Myth: Coffee can sober up someone who has had too much to drink.
Fact: Only time sobers. It takes about one hour for your body to process each drink.

Myth: Hard liquor is more intoxicating than beer or wine.
Fact: A 12-ounce can of beer, a five-ounce glass of wine, a 12-ounce wine cooler contain the same amount of alcohol and the same intoxication potential as 1 1/2 oz. of liquor.

Myth: Someone who has had too much to drink will look intoxicated.
Fact: Someone’s physical appearance can be misleading. One drink can impair someone’s ability to drive. Judgment is the first thing affected when someone has been drinking and important motor skills are next.

Always designate a driver if you leave your home to celebrate. Responsible planning means identifying the person who will do the driving before celebrations begin. The designated driver is the one who will be responsible for getting you home safely.

• Plan a safe way home before the fun begins.
• Buckle Up. A seatbelt is your vehicle’s most important safety feature, but it only works if you use it.
• If you’re impaired and did not designate a driver, use a ride service, call a sober friend or family member, or use public transportation so you are sure to get home safely.
• If you happen to see an impaired driver on the road, don’t hesitate to contact local law enforcement or dial *FHP (*347). This call could save a life.
• And remember, possession of an open alcoholic beverage container in a vehicle (in motion or stopped) by the driver and or the passenger(s) is a violation of Florida law.
