Our Shumaker great grandparents filed a homestead in the Little River area of Miami in 1900. Our grandmother Mona spent her early childhood here. In 1900, filing a homestead in Miami involved applying for up to 160 acres of public land, paying a fee of $10 to $18 and living on and cultivating the land for five years to gain title. Claimants could also commute the claim after six months by paying $1.25 per acre. Fruit companies were buying up land and planting pineapples. The native pine landscape is captured in this painting by George W. Potter. (If not saw palmetto, I believe those are pineapples, not native, in the foreground.)
