Crews are resurfacing U.S. 98, from Paraiso Boulevard to Regions Way, and S.R. 293 (Danny Wuerffel Way), from the base of the Mid-Bay Bridge to U.S. 98, in Destin.

Here is a look at recent nighttime paving operations. The “screed”, located at the back of the paving machine and shown on the left side of the photo, controls the thickness, flattens the surface and applies initial compaction of the new asphalt.

Behind the equipment, crew members address any irregularities by manually leveling areas to ensure a smooth surface.

This work is part of the $4 million U.S. 98 and S.R. 293 (Danny Wuerffel Way) resurfacing project in Destin.

Roadwork 101: Mechanical Screed System.

A mechanical screed system moves across the newly placed concrete to level and smooth the surface before it cures. The equipment travels along rails spanning the width of the bridge deck, creating a uniform surface designed to meet precise roadway and bridge construction standards.

Mechanical screeds play an important role in producing a smooth driving surface and supporting the long-term durability of bridge structures.

𝐆𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐧 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐏𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐁𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝟏𝟏𝟎 𝐑𝐚𝐦𝐩 – The week of Sunday, June 21, drivers may encounter the following construction-related traffic disruptions:

▪ Garden Street, between Pace Boulevard and N. Donelson Street, is reduced to two travel lanes (one in each direction) as crews perform construction activities on the north side of the street. This temporary traffic configuration will be in place through late 2026.

▪ Temporary side street closures north of Garden Street for stormwater drainage system reconstruction. This week, drivers may encounter a closure with detour at F Street. Signage will be in place to direct drivers through the work zone.

▪ On-street parking is closed on Garden Street, between A Street and L Street.

All activities are weather dependent and may be delayed or rescheduled in the event of inclement weather. Drivers are reminded to use caution, especially at night, when traveling through a work zone and to watch for construction workers and equipment entering and exiting the roadway.

Aggregate placement is an important step in the reconstruction of the ECUA sanitary sewer system along Garden Street in downtown Pensacola.

Before crews can install sewer components, a bedding layer of crushed stone, known as aggregate, is placed in the trench to create a level base. The pipe is then installed, and another load of aggregate is placed around it for support and stability. Finally, additional backfill material is layered on top and compacted, creating a strong foundation for future travel lanes and sidewalks.

The $21.5 million Garden Street improvement project extends from Pace Boulevard to the I-110 ramp and includes resurfacing, sidewalk and crosswalk improvements, stormwater management enhancements, ECUA utility system upgrades, and new signage and pavement markings.

Completion is currently scheduled for late 2027.

U.S. 98 drivers will encounter intermittent and alternating lane closures from Mandy Lane to Nautilus Street Sunday, June 21 through Friday, June 26 from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. for paving operations.

U.S. 98 drivers will encounter intermittent and alternating lane closures between Nautilus Street and Richard Jackson Boulevard Sunday, June 21 through Thursday, June 25 from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Crews will be paving the roadway.

Beginning Friday, June 19, new traffic signals will be activated in flash mode on U.S. 98 at the Mandy Lane and Gulf Boulevard intersections. The signals will remain in flash mode until Tuesday, July 7, when they will become fully operational.

Construction activities will continue on U.S. 98, between Mandy Lane and Nautilus Street, that may require lane closures Sunday through Thursday, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Additionally, drivers are reminded that the speed limit is temporarily reduced to 40 mph.

This work is part of the $52 million project to widen 2.3 miles of U.S. 98, which includes increasing capacity from four to six lanes in Bay County.

This project is scheduled for completion this summer.
