The $110 million construction project to widen 4.8 miles of U.S. 98 (Panama City Beach Parkway) from four to six travel lanes between Richard Jackson Boulevard and Mandy Lane in Bay County has begun. The construction effort will increase capacity, improve safety, and reduce congestion for a segment of U.S. 98 that accommodates more than 55,000 drivers daily. In addition to widening the roadway, crews will construct new bicycle lanes and sidewalks on both sides of U.S. 98, add new traffic signals at both Mandy Lane and Gulf Boulevard, make improvements at the Pier Park Drive intersection, and upgrade stormwater drainage systems. OKALOOSA COUNTY

Josie Road to Florida Place SE
The $14.9 million construction project aimed at milling and resurfacing a 6.9-mile segment of U.S. 98 (State Road 30/Miracle Strip Parkway), from Josie Road to Florida Place SE, in Okaloosa County. The project also includes minor widening of shoulders and intersections throughout the project limits, upgrading sidewalks and pedestrian crossings to comply with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements, as well as drainage improvements, new signage, and enhanced pavement markings. The project is estimated for completion in fall 2024. SANTA ROSA COUNTY

Bayshore Road to Portside Drive
Construction activities are taking for the widening and improvements of the 4.25-mile stretch of US 98 from Bayshore Road to Portside Drive in Santa Rosa County. Project improvements include widening from a 4-lane to a 6-lane urban facility with a raised median, safety, and drainage upgrades, resurfacing S.R. 281 from U.S. 98 to Garcon Point Bridge, extending the existing shared-use path on the south side of U.S. 98 to Gondolier Boulevard; and new signage and pavement markings. This project is slated for completion in mid 2025. TRAFFIC IMPACTS

Bay County:
During construction, drivers may encounter detours, lane closures and minor traffic shifts. Two eastbound and two westbound travel lanes will be maintained at all times. Intermittent, and temporary lane closures will only occur between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. Access to businesses will open at all times. Santa Rosa County:
There will be no traffic impacts associated with the construction of the ponds, but nearby residents and businesses may experience some noise during pond construction. When major roadway construction activities begin, motorists traveling along U.S. 98 can anticipate intermittent lane closures and restrictions between 9 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. Motorists are reminded to be alert for the presence of construction workers, obey the posted speed limit, and refrain from texting while driving. Construction crews reached a major milestone with the completion of the water main reconstruction along Garden Steet in downtown Pensacola. This work is part of the infrastructure upgrades included in FDOTโ€™s $21.5 million Garden Street improvement project.

In the foreground of this photo are newly installed water system valves, essential components of the upgraded underground water main infrastructure. These valves allow crews to access specific sections of the system for maintenance, emergency repairs, and future service connections without disrupting water service to the entire corridor.

With water main work complete, crews have advanced into the next phase of utility enhancements: installation of a new sanitary sewer system between B Street and E Street.

Temporary closures of side streets intersecting Garden Street may occur during construction activities. However, access driveways and businesses will be maintained at all times.

This project is scheduled for completion in late 2027.

Progress is taking shape on the U.S. 98 Widening Project as work on the Mandy Lane to Nautilus Street segment moves closer to completion. The latest aerial view highlights major roadway features coming together, including newly completed turn lanes and raised medians that are beginning to define the corridorโ€™s final configuration.

These improvements are designed to help organize traffic movements by providing dedicated spaces for turning vehicles, reducing conflicts between through traffic and turning traffic, and improving overall traffic flow along this busy section of U.S. 98.

This work is part of ongoing efforts to expand the roadway and improve traffic flow along the Back Beach Road corridor. The $110 million U.S. 98 (Panama City Beach Parkway) construction effort is currently scheduled for completion in late 2027.
