For official information, visit: www.fws.gov/refuge/chincoteague. Welcome to the official page of Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, located on Assateague Island in Virginia! The Refuge encompasses extraordinary and ever-changing lands at the edge of the sea, a

place where unique habitats and wildlife flourish. In partnership with others, the refuge is a vital part of a larger system of protected lands and waters on the Delmarva Peninsula that are critical to migratory birds. People from around the world can visit the refuge to learn, recreate, refresh themselves, be inspired by wildlife and wild lands, and renew their connection with nature. Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1943 to provide habitat for migratory birds with an emphasis on conserving greater snow geese. Today we protect over 14,000 acres of beach, dunes, marsh, and maritime forest and provide habitat for waterfowl, wading birds, shorebirds, and song birds as well as other species of wildlife and plants. At the same time we are proud to be one of the most visited refuges in the country welcoming upwards of 1.25 million visitors annually. You are welcome to visit any time of the year and every season brings unique opportunities to enjoy nature. You can hike the trails or stroll on the beach, watch wildlife, take pictures, go fishing, climb the lighthouse, hunt, attend ranger guided programs, discover our visitor center… the list goes on! Please keep in mind that we do not allow pets on our refuge, even in your vehicle. Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge is just one of over 560 refuges across the country. The National Wildlife Refuge System is the world’s largest collection of lands set aside specifically for the conservation of wildlife and the protection of ecosystems, with at least one site in each state. . Fish and Wildlife Service administers the Refuge System to safeguard the nation’s fish, wildlife, plants and their habitats. The Service is known for our scientific excellence, our stewardship of lands and natural resources, our dedication to conservation and our stellar wildlife professionals. While we hope that this page will help you stay connected to our work, we also hope that it will keep us connected to you and the issues you care about. Your participation on this page is vital and all feedback is welcome--both good and bad. Your perspective is welcomed and we hope that conversations about the Service can be productive, fun, and engaging. This is an official page of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Great turtle tips!

Great turtle tips!

One of the best ways you can help protect turtles is to assist them in crossing roads. Here are some tips to do it right!

1. If possible, stand guard while it finishes on its own. It's always best to avoid touching wildlife if you can.
2. If you must move a turtle, move it in the direction it was heading.
3. Never pick a turtle up by its tail! You could injure it!
4. Move turtles with a car mat or by gently holding them by the back of their shell.

Happy World Oceans Day!

Our oceans do incredible things. They supply more than half of the oxygen we breathe, plentiful food, and so much more. They are home to an abundance of life, and we depend on these complex webs for our own survival. Help the ocean by leaving no trace, and we help ourselves in the process.

Happy Great Outdoors Month!

Celebrate spending time in the great outdoors by visiting the refuge this month and enjoying the trails, scenery, and wildlife that we have to offer. Don’t forget to stop by the visitor center to meet a ranger, complete a Jr. Ranger booklet, or enjoy a program about the history and critters of Assateague Island.

We had some special visitors this morning at the water feature at Eastern Shore of Virginia NWR. This turkey hen emerged from the woods to get some sips of water and was followed by about ten tiny chicks!

These little ones just hatched very recently and will stay with their mother for several months before going off on their own into the great unknown. We wish this family the best!

It's lighthouse time!

It's lighthouse time!

Good Morning!! The Assateague Lighthouse will be open today, Friday, May 29, 2026 and tomorrow, Saturday, May 30, 2026, weather permitting for climbing. The hours will be 10:00 a.m. with last climb at 3:30 p.m.

Please note: The climb is only up to the observation area. Visitors are not permitted to climb over the sign that says “Area Beyond this Sign is Closed. All public entry prohibited.” Only the Coast Guard is authorized to go past the observation area.

The lighthouse parking lot is very small and many visitors park on the grass area near the parking lot. This often causes problems with the flow of traffic on Beach Road. We suggest, if visitors are able, to please park in the much larger visitor center parking lot and walk to the lighthouse. There is an access road across from the entrance to the visitor center that leads to the lighthouse.

The climb is free but donations are welcome. You can donate in cash or use the new QR code at the lighthouse or by credit card at the Bateman Visitor Center. Renovations to the lighthouse are paid with donated dollars.

Please wear comfortable shoes. There are 175 steps up to the observation area…don’t worry, there’s a landing to rest every 25 steps. Bring your smiles, your questions and your patience for our wonderful volunteers both at the bottom and the top. Bring your bug spray. The Assateague nibblers are currently developing a plan to welcome tourists to their home.

After you climb the lighthouse, please come to the Bateman Visitor Center. While inside feel free to take in the exhibits about the Refuge and visit our great gift shop. The shop has many great items including lighthouse memorabilia. Children are encouraged to complete age appropriate booklets to earn a Refuge patch. Ask the wonderful volunteer at the front desk about these booklets and patches.

Enjoy the climb and the view!!

Check out our neighbors over at Coastal Delaware for some entertaining piping plover content! We can't wait to see what this season of Plove Cove brings...

Introducing some of our lovely bachelorettes for the 2026 season of Plove Cove!

Rogue – After nesting at Fowler Beach for the past 3 years, this sassy gal is back and looking for love. Her mate last year was lost to predation, but that didn’t stop her from pairing up with her closest neighbor, David, for a second successful shot.

Mad Max – Unlike her namesake, this gal doesn’t have a lot of presence at the beach. This is her first year at the Plove Cove and there are many eligible bachelors waiting to figure out who she is.

Tokyo – A Delaware native, Tokyo spent her first year on the Jersey Shore. We think that might have been a bit much for this super chill lady because she came back to Fowler and has been here ever since!

Birdie – Part of one of our most stable and successful power couples, Birdie is a force to be reckoned with. She knows what she’s about and wastes no time shacking up with Bob every season. Will she prove true or will the season throw a wrench into her meticulous plans?

Butterfly milkweed is in bloom right now! You are likely to find this plant in butterfly gardens or monarch waystations. Look for the bright orange flowers and see if you can spot a monarch caterpillar or two... you might just get lucky!

🐝Happy World Bee Day!🐝

Virginia is home to over 400 species of bees. From huge Eastern carpenter bees to tiny sweat bees, all bees are important pollinators!

Remember, bees don’t want to sting you. If a bee comes near, move slowly and carefully away. You are likely near their home or food and they will leave you alone once they feel safe.
