Chincoteague Island Library

Chincoteague Island Library The Chincoteague Island Library is a privately-supported free library that serves residents and visitors year round.

Our Chincoteague Island Library is a small public library serving the residents of Chincoteague, our Eastern Shore neighbors and many seasonal visitors. Although free and open to the public, the library is independent and supported by private donations and grants and staffed by over 30 volunteers. We are affiliated with the Eastern Shore Public Library in Accomac, Virginia and share collections. T

he library contains current and popular books, audio books, CDs, a basic reference collection, magazines, DVDs, videos, and newspapers. There are computers for e-mail, word processing and surfing the net. The Island Library also offers 24-hour wireless internet connection. The Island Library offers programs for children and adults throughout the year. The children’s programs include a summer story time/craft hour held on Thursdays during July and August as well as several special programs throughout the year. Several book clubs also hold monthly discussions during the year. The library opened its doors on July 4, 1995. Less than 15 years later on Saturday, April 17, 2010, the library dedicated its brand new wing which tripled the size of the original building. Local architectural designer, Richard Vesely, donated his time and talent to create a design for an addition that preserved the original barbershop building and created a handsome new landmark that blends naturally into its historic waterside location. The Town of Chincoteague donated the land on which to build the addition, the Norfolk Foundation awarded the library a generous grant, and full-time, part-time residents and visitors of the community generously donated their time, talent and funds to help us reach our goal.

Corey Saulsbury was the recipient of the Chincoteague Island Library’s 2026 annual scholarship, a $1,000 award. Corey will be attending Old Dominion University to obtain a master’s degree in mechanical engineering and then plans to work for NASA. He has participated in varsity golf, basketball, and track and field. He’s a true team player, having been awarded multiple “team before self” awards in various sports.

Corey has also been a part of the National Beta Club. He has volunteered at many community festivals and has helped with the recreational basketball league by refereeing games and serving as an assistant coach on Saturdays. Corey shows great character, strong work ethic, and leadership.

In his junior year of high school, he took an additional online college course called Virginia Earth System Science Scholars. His dedication helped him earn an Energy and Sustainability Internship at NASA over the summer. Without taking that extra college course, he would not have qualified for the NASA internship.

The Chincoteague Island Library thanks Diane Fisher for heading the scholarship committee and for presenting the award. The Library wishes Corey and all 2026 graduates every success and good luck on their journey. 🎓
